8'10" x 12'7" Pakistani Kazak Rug | Mamluk Octagon Medallion | Brand New, Never Used

This 8'10" x 12'7" Kazak rug is a brand new, never used piece, hand-knotted entirely by hand in 100% wool on a cotton foundation and drawn from one of the oldest medallion cartoons in the history of the Oriental rug: the Mamluk octagon of 16th century Cairo. The handle is substantial without being stiff, the pile is clipped at a medium height that lets the small-scale drawing stay legible, and the wool has the faint natural sheen visible in the close-up photograph. At just under 9 by 13 feet it covers a full seating group with pile to spare on all 4 sides. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a hand-knotted, single-owner piece made in Pakistan.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a strict Mamluk arrangement: an ivory octagon carrying an 8 petal pinwheel rosette, ringed by 12 small red and navy star flowers, then a navy and ivory ray band, then a red 8 pointed star frame. That core sits inside a large blue square panel scattered with thin red vine sprays and ringed by ivory octagons, each filled with its own 8 petal rosette in green, red and violet. Beyond the panel the soft coral field is covered edge to edge with a tiny diamond lattice, a dense repeat that reads almost like a textile weave from standing height, broken only by 4 dark 8 pointed stars set at the field corners. Both ends carry a navy panel of alternating cross-flower cartouches and slender cypress columns, a direct quotation of early Cairene panel borders. Working outward, a green vine stripe with paired red leaves, then the wide ivory main border of alternating navy and coral roundels, and finally a light blue outer stripe of pink S-scrolls and small hexagons. Anyone drawn to strongly drawn geometric rugs will recognize how disciplined the layout is: every element is squared, counted and repeated.

A Soft Coral Field With Ivory, Blue and Green

The ground color is a soft coral, a warm tomato red that has been lightened so it never turns loud, and because the lattice over it is knotted in ivory, green and pale blue the field reads as a mottled coral rather than a flat block. The central panel and the outer stripe are a dusty denim blue with a gray cast, cooler and lighter than the deep navy used for the end panels, the border roundels and the medallion rays, so there are two distinct blues working against each other. Ivory is the relief color throughout: the octagons, the main border ground, the ray band and the fine outlining. Green appears twice, as an olive sage in the vine stripe and as a brighter leaf green inside the rosettes, and small accents of pale violet, salmon pink and mustard gold turn up in the border flowers. The selvages and the flat woven ends are a clear true red, which frames the softer coral of the field neatly.

Woven in Pakistan in the Kazak Tradition

Pakistan's weaving belt around Peshawar and Lahore is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted Kazak and Mamluk reproductions are made today, and the best of that work is honest, heavy and built to be walked on. This piece shows the marks of a careful workshop: even knot rows, straight selvages, squared corners and a lattice repeat that holds its count across 12 feet of length without drifting. The wool is hand-spun and takes dye unevenly by a small margin, which is exactly what gives the coral field its gentle movement instead of a printed flatness. Knot count here is village grade rather than city fine, the right choice for a geometric cartoon of this scale, and it pays the buyer back in density and wear resistance. Among large hand-knotted area rugs this is the size that anchors a room, and at 8'10" x 12'7" it arrives brand new, never laid, with its full original pile.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
