At 12'7" x 19'2" this is a room-defining weave, the scale a workshop only commits to when the design is worth the loom time. This Persian Nain rug carries a soft ivory ground, a stepped blue floral medallion at the center, and matching quarter medallions in all 4 corners, drawn with the thin silk outlining that gives Nain work its unmistakable drafting. The pile is wool with silk, so the vines catch the light at a different angle than the wool ground and the pattern shifts as you walk past it. It has never been used: the pile stands full height edge to edge, the fringes are original and even, and the selvages are intact. Design and Motifs

The center holds an 8 petal rosette inside a ring of blue teardrop cartouches, each one filled with a small 4 petal flower, radiating out into a star of lotus palmettes and split leaves. From there the field opens into a dense all-over floral field of scrolling arabesque vines, curled cloud bands, carnations and Shah Abbasi palmettes, all perfectly mirrored on both axes. The corner spandrels repeat a quarter of the medallion in deeper blue, and 4 small lozenge cartouches sit along the inner field edge. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a narrow blue guard, a peach band of alternating rosettes and leaves, a second blue line, then the wide ivory main border with its running vine of palmettes and rosettes, closed by a matching peach and blue outer set. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border vine turning without a break or a compressed motif, which is the mark of a proper cartoon and a disciplined weaver.

Ivory Ground With Blue and Peach Detail

The field is a warm undyed ivory, closer to soft cream than white, with a faint natural variation across the width that reads as depth rather than abrash. The blues do the drawing and they are used in at least 3 distinct values: a deep indigo navy for outlines and the darkest petals, a clear mid cobalt for the medallion cartouches and the guard stripes, and a pale powder blue for the finer vines and small blossoms. Against that sits a band of muted peach, almost salmon, in the secondary borders, which warms the whole palette and keeps the blue from reading cold. Fine details pick up camel, pale gray green, dark chocolate brown and bright white silk, and it is the white silk on the flower centers and vine tips that gives the surface its glint.
