4' x 6' Chinese Silk Rug | Garden Bakhtiar Panel Design | Fine Silk Pile, Perfect Condition
This 4' x 6' rug is hand-knotted entirely in silk and woven in China to the garden Bakhtiar layout, the compartment plan weavers call khesti. The field carries 40 small panels, 5 across and 8 down, each drawn as its own miniature garden plot, and the whole field is wrapped in a wide ivory border of flowering stems and facing birds. Silk pile is what makes this piece read the way it does: the gold and rust compartments shift from deep amber to pale honey as you move around it, and the drawing holds its detail even at panel scale. It is a recent weaving in perfect condition, and like every Oriental rug we ship, it comes with a certificate of authenticity stating size, material, origin and weave.
Please Note About the Photographs:
One of the photographs was taken at a low angle under bright showroom light, which washes the gold and rust compartments into pale pastels and exaggerates the shine of the silk. That is the light bouncing off the pile, not the true color. The flat overhead photograph is the accurate reading of this rug.
Design and Motifs
The garden Bakhtiar plan divides the field into a grid of walled plots, and here the weaver rotates three drawings through the 40 compartments. The first is a rosette panel with an 8 petal center rosette ringed by small blossoms. The second is a flowering vase set under a pointed arch, the vase handles outlined in ivory and the sprays rising in red, pale blue and cream. The third is an open garden plot with a blossoming tree and a grazing deer or a perched bird beneath it, so animals appear in roughly a third of the squares. Thin reciprocal ribbon stripes separate every panel, which is the detail that gives the field its tiled, mosaic quality. The main border runs on ivory with paired birds flanking footed vases, carnation sprays and rosette stems, held between narrow rust guard stripes, and the ends finish in plain ivory fringe. At 4' x 6' the pattern stays legible rather than crowded, which is exactly why this plan is used so often on 4x6 Oriental rugs.
Gold, Rust and Green Across 40 Compartments
Color is handled compartment by compartment, so the field reads as a patchwork rather than a single ground. Gold dominates, running from bright saffron in the vase panels to deeper ochre and amber in the tree panels. Against it sit terracotta rust squares, soft teal blue squares, olive and moss green plots, a few deep navy panels along the top and bottom rows, chocolate brown squares, and pale cream to celadon compartments that open the grid up and keep it from going heavy. Within each panel the small flowers are picked out in coral red, pink, pale sky blue and ivory, with dark olive leaves. The wide border is ivory to light cream, drawn in rust outlines with olive stems, salmon pink blossoms and light blue flower heads, so the pale frame lifts the warmer field. Because the pile is silk, every one of these tones carries two values at once depending on the direction of the nap and the light in the room.
Origin and Weaving Quality: Hand-Knotted Silk from China
This rug was made in China, where workshop weavers have specialized for decades in fine silk pile work drawn from the classic Oriental repertoire. We say that plainly because the quality stands on its own terms: a silk pile knotted this tightly is the only way 40 separate garden panels, each with its own vase, tree, bird or rosette, can be drawn at this scale without the motifs turning to mush. The close photographs show how fine the weave is, with the ruler laid across the border giving a sense of how many knot rows fit into each inch of the guard stripes. Handling confirms it: a thin, supple handle, a low clipped pile with real sheen, flat even selvages and a straight, crisp outline on every panel frame. Silk also means this piece is best suited to lower traffic use, as an accent in a bedroom or a study, or mounted on a wall where the light can move across it. Condition is perfect, with full pile, intact fringe and no repairs.
