4' x 6' Silk Oriental Rug | Esfahan Floral Medallion Design | Ivory Field, Brand New
This is a pure silk piece at 4' x 6', hand-knotted knot by knot on a cotton foundation and drawn to the classic Esfahan medallion layout. Silk is what makes it. The pile throws light back at you, so the ivory ground reads pale cream from one end of the room and warm honey from the other, and the roses look lacquered rather than printed. The weave is tight enough to hold hairline outlines around every petal, which is exactly the test a design this busy has to pass. At 48" x 72" it sits comfortably beside a bed, under a small table or in a reading corner, and it is one of the few sizes where a silk pile stays practical. The rug is brand new and never used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a layered floral medallion: a navy rosette core with an 8 petal ivory flower at its heart, ringed by sage cartouches, then by a wide sunburst of curling vine tips. Two pendant cartouches run out from the medallion on the long axis, each one a small green shield filled with roses and ringed by apricot rays. Around all of that the field is a true all over drawing, an endless rose and vine lattice where full cabbage roses, smaller gold daisies and sky blue forget-me-nots repeat without ever lining up in rows. Sage green corner spandrels pin the four corners, filled with blue arabesque scroll and flowering palmettes. The border system is deep for a rug this size: a wide ivory main band of alternating roses and shield shaped cartouches, flanked by near-black navy guard stripes, a fine zigzag reciprocal stripe and an apricot outer band carrying a running vine. It is a drawing that rewards standing still and looking, which is what the Esfahan tradition is built on.
Ivory, Rose Red and Deep Navy
Ivory is the ground color and it carries a faint butter warmth rather than a cold white, so the rug sits easily with oak, walnut and cream upholstery. Against it the palette is tightly controlled. Rose red does the heavy lifting in the full blooms, deepening to oxblood in the outlines and softening to dusty pink in the half-opened buds. Sage and olive green fill the medallion ground, the spandrels and every leaf, which keeps the red from taking over. Deep navy, so dark in places that it reads almost black, frames the main border and forms the medallion core, and that is the color that gives the whole rug its edge and definition. Scattered through the field are small accents of sky blue, gold and apricot that catch the light first because of the silk sheen. Shade variation is part of the material: tilt the rug and the ivory flips between light and shadow, which is the normal and desirable behavior of a hand-knotted silk pile, not a flaw. If ivory grounds are the direction you are shopping, this one is about as classic as the color gets.
Woven in China to the Esfahan Pattern
This rug was made in China, where the best workshops have spent decades specializing in fine silk weaving and have built a genuine reputation for the knot counts a curved line design demands. The Esfahan layout is a classical pattern, and reproducing it honestly takes a very fine weave: the vine has to bend, not step, and the petal outlines have to stay one or two knots wide. The back of this piece shows that density clearly, with crisp knot definition straight through to the selvage and clean silk fringe finishing both ends. Calling it an Oriental rug is the accurate description, and buyers who want the look of a fine classical medallion in hand-knotted silk get it here without the price a comparable antique would carry. It also belongs to one of the most useful formats we stock, since 4x6 Oriental rugs fit the rooms most people are actually furnishing.
