6'1" x 9'4" Oriental Rug | Tabriz Floral Medallion Design | Cream & Dusty Pink | Approx. 400 KPSI

This 6'1" x 9'4" Oriental rug is brand new and has never been on a floor. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at approximately 400 knots per square inch, a count high enough to hold the hair-thin outlines and tiny blossom heads you can see in the close-up photographs. The back photo, shot against a ruler, shows how tight and even the knotting is across the width, and the fringes are the natural extension of the warps rather than a sewn-on finish. At just over 6 feet by 9 feet it is one of the most usable proportions there is, sitting comfortably under a sofa group or a 6 seat dining table without swallowing the room. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming the size, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Tabriz formula: a lobed central medallion with a small ivory rosette at its exact center, feathered leaf points radiating outward, and a pendant dropping toward each end. The cream field around it is not left open. It is filled edge to edge with curling split leaves, long vine tendrils, garlands of small round blossoms strung like beads, and large palmettes that mirror perfectly across both axes. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion vocabulary in a softer tone so the eye reads a complete, closed composition rather than a cut-off pattern. The main border carries an alternating run of rosettes and scrolling acanthus, and if you look closely at the corner photograph you will find small birds perched among the vines, a detail the weaver only attempts when the knot count allows it. Two narrow ivory guard stripes on each side frame the whole thing and keep the busy field from spilling past the edge.

A Cream Field With Dusty Pink and Blue-Gray

The ground is a warm cream, closer to unbleached ivory than to white, which is what makes this piece so easy to place in a room that already has color in it. Sitting on that ground, the medallion reads as a muted terracotta rose, deepening to burgundy at its inner cartouche and lightening to a powdery salmon at the feathered tips. The main border is a soft dusty pink verging on mauve, and the spandrels pick up a smoky blue-gray that repeats through the leaves and the small flower heads scattered across the field. Brown and near-black outlining does the structural work, drawing every stem and petal so the pattern stays crisp from standing height, while touches of sage green, beige and a deeper wine red keep the palette from going flat. It belongs with the softer cream and ivory rugs rather than the saturated red and navy school.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that has specialized for decades in reproducing the great classical floral designs at a high knot count. There is no pretense here: it is an honest hand-knotted Chinese weave of a Tabriz cartoon, and the workmanship stands on its own. Roughly 400 knots per square inch puts it far above the density of ordinary decorative production, which is precisely why the curved lines stay curved and the garland blossoms do not turn into blocks. The wool pile is clipped low and evenly so the pattern stays legible, the cotton warps and wefts give the rug a flat, obedient lie on a hard floor, and the selvedges and fringes are cleanly finished on all 4 sides. If a room-sized format is your constraint, it sits among our 6x9 area rugs, and at this weave it will hold up to real traffic for generations.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
