6' x 9' Indian Ziegler Rug | Wool | Light Green

A 6' x 9' wool rug knotted by hand in India, worked in a Ziegler drawing: an all-over floral field inside a wide ivory border. The overall impression is pale, a light green ground carrying blossoms in soft coral, rose and sage, with brown outlines doing most of the drawing. Seen flat, as in the full views, the pattern reads as a loose trellis of curving stems rather than a medallion layout.

The design

The field is covered edge to edge with large palmettes and serrated leaves hung on a thin, wandering vine, each repeat turned to mirror the one beside it. Smaller rosettes, half-open lotus heads and little stepped squares in red fill the spaces between, and a single broad palmette rosette sits at the centre of the field without being set off as a medallion. The main border alternates flowering bouquets with a tall leaf-shaped cartouche filled with a green tree, standing on a low scalloped ground line, and two narrow guard stripes of small flowers and running vine close the rectangular outline on all four sides.

The colour

The ground is a light green with a mint cast, lightening almost to cream where the pile lies away from the light, and the border is a paler ivory still. Against that, the flower heads are drawn in brick and coral, in a dusty rose, and in a quiet sage that darkens to a deeper teal green in the border trees. The outlines are a soft brown rather than black, which keeps the whole surface low in contrast, and the only sharp notes are the small blocks of red scattered through the field.

The making

Hand-knotted in India with a wool pile, finished with plain ivory fringes at both ends. The back, shown with a tape measure for scale, is clear enough to read the pattern through the knots. The rug is new and in perfect condition, with full pile and no repair, one of the hand-knotted rugs we stock with nothing in its history to report.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
