6' x 9' Indian Chobi Rug | Wool | Sage Green and Ivory

A 6' x 9' wool rug knotted in India to a Chobi pattern. The field is an olive green that runs towards brown in the deeper photographs, covered edge to edge with curling vines and broad palmettes, and the whole of it is held inside a wide ivory border. At a glance the rug reads green and gold, with small points of indigo and red where the flower heads sit.

The design

There is no medallion. The field carries an allover scroll: long leafy vines that cross and recross to make loose diamond compartments, with a fan-shaped palmette at each crossing and a smaller eight-petal rosette, dark indigo at the centre, on the vertical axis between them. Smaller buds and single flower heads fill the ground between the larger elements, so very little olive is left plain. The main border is a run of round rosettes alternating with pendant palmettes, linked by a thin vine, and it is flanked on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small four-petal flowers. Plain cotton fringe finishes both ends, as the corner photographs show.

The colour

The ground is a soft, slightly greyed green, closer to sage in the flat overhead shots and closer to olive or drab brown where the pile leans away from the light. Against it the drawing is mostly old gold and pale straw, with leaves and small flower centres in a lighter pistachio green. The sharper notes are few and well spaced: dark indigo on leaf tips and rosette centres, madder red in the petal outlines, and a soft grey lilac on some of the smaller blossoms. The border is a warm ivory that tips towards apricot in places, which keeps the transition from border to field gentle rather than abrupt.

The making

Hand-knotted in India, rectangular, with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton fringe. The folded corner in one photograph shows the pattern reading clearly on the reverse, an indication that the knotting is fine enough to carry the small floral detail of the guard stripes. The table records the rug as new and in perfect condition, and nothing in the photographs contradicts that: full pile, straight sides, no wear at the ends. It is one of the quieter greens in our hand-knotted stock.
