16'10" x 19'7" Pakistani Ziegler Rug | Wool | Light Green and Gold

A hand-knotted carpet from Pakistan in natural organic wool, measuring 16'10" x 19'7". The proportions are close to square for a carpet of this length, which suits a large dining room or a wide reception floor. At a glance it reads as a pale green field carrying an open floral pattern in gold and beige, contained by one broad gold border. Nothing about it is loud: the drawing is large in scale and low in contrast, and the piece works as a ground colour rather than a focal point.

Design

The field has no medallion. It carries an all-over Ziegler pattern of palmettes and open rosettes linked by thin curving vines, with long serrated leaves swinging between them, the repeat large enough that whole flower heads sit several hands apart. One rosette type shows a small cusped centre outlined in red, another opens into a flat eight-lobed bloom with a square red eye. The main border runs a procession of leafy palmettes and split vine work, flanked by narrow guard stripes of small star rosettes, and the outer edge finishes in a plain green selvage band with ivory fringe at both ends of this rectangular carpet.

Colour

The field is a soft light green, closer to sage than to olive, and it moves in gentle horizontal bands where the dye lot shifts across the width. Against it the flowers are worked in gold and pale beige, with leaves in a soft walnut brown and a few grey-blue notes in the smaller buds. A touch of rust red appears only as outlines and tiny centre squares, enough to give the eye somewhere to land. The border is a warmer gold-camel that lifts the green field without cutting against it.

Making

Hand-knotted in Pakistan with a pile of natural organic wool, cropped at a medium height so the knot rows read clearly on the reverse, as the folded corner shows. The wool has a quiet sheen in raking light, visible where the pile is rolled back on itself. The carpet is new and in perfect, unused condition, with full pile from edge to edge and clean fringes.
