11'11" x 14'8" Pakistani Ziegler Rug | Wool | Olive Green and Gold

An oversize carpet measuring 11'11" x 14'8", hand-knotted in Pakistan with a 5/16" wool pile. The field is a soft olive brown, drawn all over with pale palmettes and thin vinework, and it is framed by a broad honey gold border. Seen from across a room it reads as one quiet warm tone; up close the drawing is clear and the pile carries a gentle striation from the yarn. It is one of the larger pieces among the hand-knotted rugs we carry.

Design

The Ziegler pattern here is an all-over one, with no medallion. Curving vines run the length of the field and carry rounded rosettes, split leaves and lanceolate palmettes, several of them outlined in a thin brick red that gives the eye something to catch on. The main border is wide and holds alternating motifs, a leafy palmette with a red-drawn heart and a smaller rosette cluster, set against a plain gold ground with scattered filler sprigs. Two narrow guard stripes of small hooked florets run either side of it, and the rug closes with a plain olive outer band and an ivory fringe.

Colour

The field sits between olive green and warm khaki, shifting a little along the striations of the pile, while the border is a clear honey gold that lifts noticeably where the light crosses it. The drawing is worked in cream and pale straw with touches of sage and soft teal, a dusty lilac grey in the leaf shading and short lines of brick red at the palmette outlines. Those small multi-colour accents keep the two large blocks of tone from flattening against each other.

Making

Hand-knotted in Pakistan in a rectangular format, with a wool pile clipped to 5/16" over a firm foundation. The reverse, visible where the corner is turned back, shows the knot lines plainly and the pattern legible from behind. The rug is new, with full pile, even selvedges and unworn fringes at both ends.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
