5' x 10' Pakistani Ziegler Rug | Wool | Sage Green and Gold

At 5' x 10' this is a long rectangle of the proportion that suits a hall, a narrow sitting room or the length of a dining table. It was knotted in Pakistan with a wool pile, and reads at a glance as a soft grey-green field covered edge to edge with gold and cream flowerheads, held inside a wide sand-gold border.

The design

The field carries an all-over Ziegler pattern: large open palmettes and round rosettes linked by curving vines and long serrated leaves, with smaller four-petalled flowers set on the vertical axis between them. The drawing is loose rather than tight, so the pattern reads as big shapes with air between them instead of dense detail. The main border alternates broad palmettes with leaf-filled cartouches, each flowerhead outlined in a thin rust line, and is flanked on both sides by narrow guard stripes of meandering vine. The ends finish in cream fringe.

The colour

The ground is a sage green that leans grey in flat daylight and shows fine horizontal striation across the field, lighter in some bands than others. Against it the ornament runs from pale cream through honey to a deeper sand gold in the border, with small amounts of soft blue-green in the leaves. Rust red appears only as outlines, a stroke around a rosette or the edge of a palmette, and that sparing use is what keeps the whole rug quiet rather than warm.

The making

The rug is hand-knotted, with a 1/4" wool pile. The reverse, visible where the rug is turned back, shows the pattern coming through clearly on a grey foundation with even rows. It is new and in perfect condition, with full pile and clean selvedges, and it sits among the hand-knotted rugs we carry from Pakistan.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
