10' x 14' Pakistani Oushak Rug | Wool | Sage Green

A hand-knotted Oushak in natural wool, woven in Pakistan and measuring Width: 10' x Length: 14'. The field is a pale sand that shifts toward oatmeal as the light moves across it, drawn with widely spaced palmettes and rosettes, and the whole is framed by a broad greyed-sage border. Seen from across a room, as in the second photograph, it reads as one quiet tone with the pattern surfacing slowly. Among our hand-knotted stock it is one of the calmer pieces.

Design

The field carries an allover repeat rather than a medallion: large cream palmettes with serrated edges, small ringed rosettes, blossoms set in pale blue eight-pointed stars, and slender leaf forms, all sitting on a faint diamond lattice that is barely darker than the ground. The spacing is generous, so each motif stands clear of its neighbours. The main border is a wide band of flowerheads and curling vines linked by scrolling stems, and it is edged on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes carrying a running leaf meander with small blue crosses at the joins. The ends finish in plain ivory fringe, visible in the corner and edge photographs.

Colour

The dominant reading is neutral: sand, oatmeal and ivory through the field, with the border a soft grey-taupe that carries the sage green named in the specification as a muted, dusty cast rather than a clear green. Against that, the accents do the work. Pale sky blue fills the star blossoms and the small crosses in the guard stripes, apricot and light terracotta warm the palmettes, and thin brick-red outlines trace some of the vine work in the field, best seen in the close detail shots. Nothing is saturated, and the contrast between field and border is low enough that the rug settles into a room instead of announcing itself.

Making

The rug is hand-knotted with a pile of natural wool, and the folded corner photograph shows an even, close back with the pattern legible from the reverse. It is new and in perfect condition, with full pile and clean selvedges. At 10 feet by 14 feet it is a rectangular piece at the upper end of our oversize range, large enough to carry a pair of facing sofas with their front legs on the wool.
