7'1" x 10'5" Persian Tabriz Rug | All-Over Floral and Animal Field | Excellent Condition

This is a hand-knotted Persian Tabriz in a room-filling 7'1" x 10'5", woven on a cotton foundation with a wool pile that still stands full and even across the whole surface. Instead of the usual central medallion, the weaver filled the red field edge to edge with a mirrored all-over floral design and tucked small animals into the vinework, which is the kind of detail that rewards a close look rather than a glance. It sits squarely in the most usable bracket we sell, so it reads naturally alongside other 7x10 Persian rugs while carrying more drawing than most of them. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The field is built on a fine scrolling vine that splits, curls and rejoins in perfect left-to-right symmetry, carrying large lobed palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split leaf arabesques and feathery serrated leaves that fan out like plumes. Anchor cartouches appear at the top, center and bottom of the field, each one a small shield shape in camel brown with an ivory blossom at its heart, giving the eye somewhere to rest in all that movement. Scattered between the stems are gazelles, leaping deer, rabbits and small birds, drawn in ivory, camel and olive at a size you only notice once you are standing over the rug. The ivory main border continues the theme with a procession of animals set between navy and teal palmettes and linked by a thin brown vine, and it is framed by narrow guard stripes of meandering blossom on a blue ground, with a reciprocal cresting motif along the outer edge that finishes the composition cleanly at all 4 corners.

Color and Palette

The ground is a true madder red, warm and slightly brick-leaning rather than cherry, with the gentle tonal variation through the field that comes from natural dye lots rather than any flaw. Against it the palette runs cool: soft teal and aqua blue in the leaves, deep indigo navy in the palmette centers and the thin outlining of the vines, and dusty olive and sage in the smaller foliage. Ivory and cream do the structural work, carrying the wide main border, the outlines of the large blossoms and the animal figures, which is what keeps the red from closing in. Camel, tobacco brown and a pale blush pink appear in the rosette hearts and the anchor cartouches, and a few touches of apricot in the border medallions warm the ivory ground. For a buyer shopping red and burgundy Persian rugs, this is the balanced version: saturated, but cooled by enough blue and ivory to work with wood, leather and cream upholstery.

Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in Azerbaijan province in northwest Persia and is the oldest continuously productive weaving city in the country, the place where the curvilinear court style was codified and where fineness is still measured in Raj, the number of knots counted across a gereh of about 2.75 in. That system exists because Tabriz workshops compete on drawing: a flowing vine, a true curve and a clean animal silhouette only hold together at a high knot count, and you can see here that the vines stay thin and continuous rather than breaking into steps. The weave is done on a cotton warp and weft, which is what keeps a rug this size flat and dimensionally stable on the floor, and the wool of the region takes dye deeply and polishes with use rather than wearing dull. The pile on this piece is intact and even from end to end, the selvedges are sound and the kilim ends and fringe are original, so it is ready to be laid down and lived on.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
