7'10" x 10' Indian Oushak Rug | Ivory Field & Light Blue Rosette Border | New, Never Used

A brand new, never used 7'10" x 10' Oushak design rug, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and still carrying the original workshop tag shown in the final photograph (rug no. 6447). It sits right in the most useful room size we sell, which is why it belongs with our 8x10 hand-knotted Oriental rugs, and the palette is deliberately quiet: ivory ground, pale blue border, gold and sage drawing. If you are weighing up terminology before you buy, our guide to what separates a Persian from an Oriental rug explains exactly where a piece like this fits. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, its materials and its origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all over floral composition rather than a single centre medallion. Four large lobed rosettes in sage and soft green, each with an ivory 4 petal flower at the heart, anchor the corners of the drawing, with a smaller gold and sage star rosette set on the centre line and a pale blue shield cartouche above it. Between them run broad gold palmettes with cream centres, split leaves, feathery serrated blossoms and thin curling vines, plus charcoal outlined cloud scrolls at the top and bottom of the field that give the layout a clear top and bottom. The main border carries big radiating palmette rosettes in rust and plum on light blue, joined by leafy gold vinework, and it is framed by two gold guard stripes and a narrow reciprocal inner band. Image 4 shows how finely the flower outlines are drawn against the open ivory ground.

A Soft Ivory and Light Blue Palette

The field reads as warm ivory with a faint sand and champagne cast where the wool catches light, which keeps it from going cold or grey in a room. Against that sit antique gold palmettes, muted sage and olive green rosettes, terracotta and rust in the border flowers, touches of dusty plum and rose, soft pale blue highlights and charcoal to near black outlines that hold every motif crisp. The light blue main border is the piece's defining note, a chalky powder blue rather than navy, and it is what makes this rug sit so easily with white trim, oak floors, linen upholstery and cool grey walls. Collectors shopping our ivory and beige Oriental rugs tend to want exactly this balance: a pale ground with enough gold and green in it to stop the floor looking washed out.

Woven in India in the Oushak Tradition

This is honest Indian workshop weaving, made in India in the Oushak idiom of large scale floral drawing and soft decorative color. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made, and we say that without apology: the loom skill, the hand-spun wool supply and the vegetable toned dye work there are excellent, and a decorative quality piece like this one gives you a genuine hand-knotted rug at a fraction of the cost of a workshop city piece. The back and fold photographs show even, well packed knotting with clear motif definition from the reverse, a straight selvage and tidy hand-finished cotton fringe. The wool pile has a glossy, slightly silky handle under the hand, cut at a medium height that will take traffic for decades while the ivory ground mellows a shade warmer with age.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
