11'7" x 15'7" Indian Rug | Transitional Open Ivory Field | Brand New, Never Used

Most large rugs shout. This one does the opposite. Across almost 16 feet of length the weaver left the field almost entirely open, in a soft camel ivory that reads as a warm neutral from across the room, and placed a single small floral medallion at the center. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, drawn in the classical idiom but edited down to something a modern interior can actually live with, which is exactly what people mean when they say a transitional Oriental rug. At this scale it belongs in the oversized rugs group, covering a full great room or seating a long dining table with chairs pulled back. The rug is new, never used and in perfect condition, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The faint lines and shadows you can see running across the open field are fold marks from flat pallet storage, not wear, not fading and not damage. On a large open-ground rug they show up in photographs far more than they do in person. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The whole composition rests on restraint. At the center sits a compact floral cluster built around an 8 petal rosette, with curling serrated leaves, small buds and a fan of stems radiating outward, no bigger than a coffee table in a field that could hold twenty of them. Each of the 4 corners carries a single small boteh-like pendant, a curled leaf with a rust spine and blue infill, floating free on the open ground and quietly marking the corners where a traditional design would have placed heavy spandrels. The main border does the decorative work: a wide ivory band carrying large blue palmettes and rosettes, linked by a continuous rust vine with split leaves, repeating cleanly around all 4 sides. Inside it runs a narrow rose-pink guard stripe scattered with tiny 4 petal flowers, and outside a camel band with a blue meandering vine, finished with a fine dark outline that keeps every edge crisp.

A Warm Ivory and Camel Palette with Antique Blue

The field is the star: a soft ivory that warms into camel and pale gold depending on where the light hits the wool, with the natural abrash of a hand-dyed ground giving it movement rather than flatness. Against that, the drawing is worked in a clear antique blue, a medium cornflower tone rather than a dark navy, which is what keeps the rug feeling light. Rust and terracotta carry the vines and palmette centers, with softer salmon and rose tones in the guard stripe and occasional muted olive and sage touches in the smaller leaves. Deep brown outlines every motif and gives the pattern its definition. The result is a genuinely neutral floor: cream, sand and gold as the base, with just enough blue and rust to tie into upholstery, wood tones and artwork without dictating the palette of the room.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this rug shows why. The reverse is even and tightly packed, with a fine cotton foundation and straight, consistent rows of knots across the full 139 inch width, which is the real test on a piece this large: a weak weave wanders and the rug will never lie square. The 3/8" wool pile is dense and springy underfoot with a clean luster where it catches the light, and the sides and hand-tied fringes are finished with the care usually reserved for much smaller work. Classical Persian-influenced drawing, reinterpreted for modern and contemporary interiors, executed at a scale very few workshops will attempt.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
