9'8" x 13'11" Contemporary Indian Rug | Silky Wool Blossom Field, Borderless | Brand New, Never Used

A borderless garden of oversized blossoms drifts from edge to edge across this 9'8" x 13'11" hand-knotted rug, with no frame, no medallion and nothing to interrupt the drawing. The wool has been finished with a soft luster, so the flower heads shift from cream to copper as you move around the room and the ground moves between sage, taupe and gold under changing light. The pile stands at 3/8", low enough to keep the outlines crisp and dense enough to take daily traffic in a main room. At close to 10 by 14 feet this is a genuine room size piece, and it belongs with our 10x14 area rugs for great rooms and open plan spaces. It is brand new, never walked on, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted rather than tufted or machine made. It sits at the strong end of what we see in modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft horizontal lines and shadows you can see across the field in several photos are fold marks from storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaving our warehouse is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is built on large scale botanicals rather than a repeating lattice: full faced chrysanthemums with 20 or more narrow petals, layered peonies drawn in loose concentric rings, open lotus blooms and small five petal buds scattered between them. Feathered leaf sprigs and thin curving stems fill the gaps, some solidly woven, others left as outline only. Behind the crisp flowers sits a second layer of tone on tone ghost blossoms, barely a shade different from the ground, which gives the field real depth on a rug this wide. There is no border at all, so the pattern runs straight off all 4 sides and reads as a fragment of a much larger painted panel, the kind of all-over floral design that sits comfortably under contemporary and transitional furniture without competing with it.

Color: Sage, Gold, Rust and Light Blue

The ground is not one flat color. It moves through muted sage green, warm taupe and a dusty mushroom brown, with broad washes of soft mustard gold pooling toward the corners and along one long side. Against that, the blossoms are worked in 4 clear families: deep rust and copper brown for the spiky chrysanthemums, pale ivory and oyster cream for the big peonies, a chalky light blue that reads almost as pale aqua for the scattered daisy forms, and buttery yellow gold for the largest leaf shapes. Fine white and cream outlining traces the petal edges, which is what makes the design legible from across a room even though the whole palette stays quiet. Under warm lamplight the gold and copper dominate; in daylight the green and blue come forward. It is an easy palette to live with, friendly to cream upholstery, walnut, brass and natural linen.

Woven in India to a High Contemporary Standard

This piece was made in India, where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and we say so plainly. Each knot is tied by hand on a cotton warp, then beaten down and sheared low, which is why the curved petal edges hold their shape instead of blurring the way they do in a tufted or power loomed imitation. The back tag reads 100% wool with no child labour, and the underside shows the even, regular knot rows of a disciplined workshop weave. Buyers new to this category often ask how a piece like this compares with classical Persian weaving, which we cover in our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug. What you get here is old world hand-knotting technique applied to a thoroughly modern painting, at 9'8" x 13'11" and in perfect, never used condition.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
