The pile is a full 3/8" of wool over a cotton foundation, so the rug has body and weight underfoot while the drawing stays crisp, and the finish is unusually clean: this piece has never been used, with no wear, no repairs and no fading anywhere in the field. Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic formal floral medallion, drawn with a light hand rather than a heavy one. A single greyish blue medallion sits dead center, lobed and scalloped at the edges, filled with an ivory palmette rosette at its core and ringed by small rose blossoms, sage leaf sprays and curling vine tips. Around it the ivory field is framed by a scalloped cartouche outline that runs the full length of the rug and softens the rectangle into a long panel. Inside that panel the ground is scattered with detached floral bouquets, slim leafy sprigs and small four petal blossoms, with matching vase and pendant motifs anchoring the field at each end of the medallion axis. The corners carry ivory spandrels drawn with the same vine work, and the border system is built in five bands: a narrow blue vine cartouche, a thin ivory guard, the wide greyish blue main border with its alternating vases and star blossoms, another guard stripe, and a final ivory outer band. The repeat is disciplined and the corners resolve cleanly, which is the first thing to check on a rug this long.

Ivory and Greyish Blue Color Detail

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, and it shifts slightly with the light because the wool takes a soft sheen where the pile lies down. Against it the medallion and the wide main border read greyish blue, a muted slate teal with no brightness in it at all, the kind of blue that sits quietly next to grey upholstery, walnut and oak. The detail work supplies the warmth: dusty rose and salmon pink blossoms, small cores of pure ivory, olive and sage green for every leaf and stem, tobacco brown and khaki for the outlined palmettes and the darker leaf tips, with occasional pinpoints of deeper indigo and a few tiny accents of true red inside the border flowers. Outlines are done in a soft taupe brown instead of black, which is why the pattern never looks graphic or hard. The overall effect from standing height is a pale, airy rug with a blue frame, and the individual colors only reveal themselves once you look closely at the medallion or a corner.
