8'2" x 10' Indian Tabriz Design Rug | Ivory Field, Floral Medallion | Fine Wool, Brand New

This 8'2" x 10' rug is a contemporary hand-knotted piece made in India, drawn in the classic Tabriz medallion format and woven in fine wool on a cotton foundation. It is brand new and has never been used, so the pile still stands full and upright and the ivory ground is clean from end to end. The drawing is the reason to look twice: a round medallion with concentric rings of tracery, four matching corner spandrels, and a field of small flowering vines that stays balanced rather than busy. If you are comparing it against other traditional work, it sits squarely in the Oriental rug tradition of curvilinear workshop design. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity documenting its size, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a lobed round medallion built outward from an 8 petal rosette, ringed first by a pale slate blue cartouche field, then by a navy band of hooked vine work, then by an outer brown ring filled with small palmettes and blossoms. Slender pendants break out of the medallion at top and bottom and finish in dark lobed finials. The 4 corners carry large spandrels of scrolling arabesque in brown and olive, each anchored by a rosette with ruby red outlining, so the ivory field reads as an open cross between them. That field is covered with a fine all over lattice of curling vines, serrated leaves and multi petal blossoms, each flower outlined in navy so it holds its shape against the cream ground. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a broad brown main border of alternating palmettes and flower sprays with rounded cartouches at the corners, flanked by rose and slate guard stripes, an olive green floral stripe, and a narrow dark outer stripe that frames the whole rug.

A Closer Look at the Colors

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than white, and it carries the whole palette. Against it sit rose pink and dusty mauve blossoms, medium cornflower blue petals, deep navy outlines, olive and forest green leaves, and small flashes of ruby red and apricot gold that keep the field lively up close. The main border shifts into a deep brown burgundy, a tone that photographs darker in the overhead view than it looks underfoot, where it reads as a soft chocolate wine. The medallion repeats that brown ground but opens into a pale blue heart, which is what gives the center its glow from across the room. Olive green appears mainly in the guard stripe and in the leaf work of the spandrels, tying the warm browns to the cooler blues. Taken together it is a mid tone traditional palette: ivory and brown doing the structural work, blue and rose doing the detail, with no harsh contrast anywhere.

Made in India: Weave and Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this rug shows why. A curvilinear medallion design like this one only works at a high knot count, because every vine has to curve cleanly and every flower has to resolve into recognizable petals rather than a stepped approximation. The close photographs show exactly that: tight rows, crisp navy outlines one knot wide, and clean definition in the smallest rosettes of the border. The pile is fine wool, dense and smooth to the hand, knotted on a cotton foundation that keeps the rug flat and square, and the ends finish in full hand-tied ivory fringe. At a true 8x10 Oriental rug size it covers the main seating area of a living room or sits under a dining table with room for the chairs, and in perfect, never used condition it starts its life with you rather than with someone else.
