This 8'4" x 11'9" Sino Tabriz is a workshop piece in the strictest sense: every flower is drawn, not approximated, and the pile has never been walked on. It is hand-knotted in wool at a 3/8" clipped pile over a cotton foundation, heavy enough to lie dead flat without a pad fighting it, and fine enough that the curved stems hold their line all the way into the corners. The near-black field carries a single ivory medallion and a wide ivory main border, a combination that reads formal from across the room and detailed from three feet away. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and construction.

Design and Motifs

The layout follows the classic Tabriz pattern book: one lobed central medallion on an ivory ground, matching quarter medallions anchoring the 4 corners, and pendant cartouches reaching north and south along the long axis. Inside the medallion sits a slate grey rosette core ringed by rose palmettes, curled acanthus leaves and tiny burgundy buds, all outlined in dark brown so the shapes stay crisp. The field around it is a dense all-over garden rather than open ground: full-blown rose heads, ivory and cream blossoms, feathered saz leaves, small birds tucked into the vinery and thin scrolling stems that tie every element back into the next. The border system runs 3 deep, a broad ivory main band of alternating burgundy palmettes and rose sprays flanked by slate blue and salmon guard stripes, with the outer edge finished in dark wool overcasting and plain ivory cotton fringe at both ends.

The Black Field and Its Ivory Frame

The ground is black with a deep bottle-green cast that only shows when light rakes across the pile, so under lamplight the field looks like dark forest and in flat daylight it reads as true black. Against it, the palette is unusually soft for a dark rug: dusty rose, salmon, blush pink, pale slate blue, sage green, cream and clotted burgundy, with almost no bright red anywhere. The medallion and the main border share the same warm ivory, which pulls the eye out to the edges and keeps the piece from feeling heavy. Small ivory and butter-yellow blossoms are scattered through the field as lights, giving the black ground depth instead of flatness. In practice this colorway is easy to live with: it sits well over dark walnut or wide-plank oak, holds its own next to charcoal and navy upholstery, and makes cream, brass and blush accents look intentional.

Sino Tabriz rugs are woven in China by workshops that adopted the Tabriz drawing and weaving discipline outright, and the best of them, like this one, are judged on exactly the same terms: how tight the knotting is, how true the medallion sits, and whether the curved lines survive at scale. The back photograph shows the point clearly, with neat rows, small even knots and the pattern reading almost as sharply from behind as it does from the front. The wool is springy, lightly clipped and takes dye evenly, which is why the rose and slate tones stay clean rather than muddy against the dark ground.
