This is a Sino Tabriz: a hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in China to the classic Tabriz drawing, with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and a 3/8" clip that keeps the fine detail legible. At 9' x 12' it covers a full seating group without crowding it, and it has never been used, so the pile still stands upright with the silky sheen you can see across the medallion in the close-up photographs. The weave is even edge to edge, the selvedges are tight, and the cotton fringe is original and unshortened, as shown against the ruler in the back photograph. Design and Motifs

The layout is the full Tabriz formula, drawn in curved line rather than village angles. A lobed rose medallion sits dead center, built up in concentric rings of cusped cartouches, small vase forms and a pale green inner rosette, with two pendants running out along the long axis. The black field around it is not left open for a moment: it carries an all over lattice of palmettes, split leaf arabesques, blossoming branches and thin vine scroll, worked so densely that the background reads as texture rather than empty ground. Four large ivory and pale blue spandrels frame the field corners, each one filled with its own floral cluster, and a second run of pale cartouche shapes breaks the field edges along all 4 sides. The main border is a wide wine red band of alternating rosettes and cusped ivory cartouches, flanked by taupe and ivory guard stripes carrying a repeating star rosette. The corner detail photograph shows small birds tucked among the border blossoms, a nice touch that rewards a close look.

Color: Black Ground, Rose Medallion and Wine Red Borders

The field is a true black, deep enough that the floral drawing floats on top of it, and it is the anchor for everything else. The medallion is a soft rose pink shading into dusty mauve, lit from within by a pale sage and ivory center. Around the field, the spandrels and the open ground beyond the medallion sit in a cool pale blue grey, almost celadon in the daylight photographs, which is what gives this piece its unusually soft, muted personality for a black rug. The main border is a muted wine red, more brick and burgundy than fire red, and it is worked with ivory, taupe, blush, ochre and slate blue flowers. Because the wool takes light well, the rose and blue tones lift and fade slightly as you walk around the rug, while the black holds steady. Practically, it is a forgiving color set: the dark ground hides everyday traffic, and the pinks and blues keep the rug from reading heavy in a room with light walls.
