9' x 12' Sino Tabriz Rug | Burgundy All-Over Floral with Black Border | New, Never Used

This is a clean, unused room-size piece: a hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in China in the Sino Tabriz manner, with a deep burgundy field, a black main border and a clipped 3/8" wool pile that still has every bit of its original body. At 9' x 12' it covers a standard living or dining room wall to wall under the furniture, which is exactly what the classic 9x12 area rug proportion was drawn for. The weave is even end to end, the fringe is original and untouched, and the back reads cleanly with no repair, no stain and no restoration. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral, drawn without a closed medallion so the eye travels rather than stops. A small rosette sits at the exact center, and from there thin curling vines spread outward in mirrored repeats, carrying large ivory palmettes, open rosettes, serrated leaves and small budding sprays right out to the field edge. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, with no straight or angular lines anywhere in the pattern, which is the hallmark of the Tabriz design vocabulary this piece follows. The black main border repeats a chain of rose heads and palmettes joined by leafy scrollwork, and it is framed on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes carrying a running vine of small flowers. The corners resolve correctly, with the border pattern turning cleanly at all 4 corners rather than being cut off, which is a detail only a properly cartooned workshop weave gets right.

Burgundy, Black and Ivory Color Story

The field is a true burgundy, closer to wine than to fire red, and it shifts noticeably with the light: it photographs darker and richer in the close-up shots and opens up to a brighter cherry tone in the full overhead view. Against that, the palmettes and rosettes are worked in ivory and soft cream with pale gold shading, so the flowers read almost lit from behind. The vine work is a muted olive green with touches of sage, cool enough to keep the red from going heavy. The main border drops to black, an anchor line that makes the burgundy look deeper than it is, and inside the black ground the roses pick up blush pink, dusty rose and more of the same ivory. Narrow ivory guard bands separate every element, and the whole palette sits comfortably on both warm oak flooring and cool stone.

Sino Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Sino Tabriz describes the source of the drawing rather than the loom: Chinese workshops adopted the Tabriz cartoon tradition, the fine curved line, the flowing vine and the tightly resolved border, and wove it on a cotton foundation with a wool pile clipped low at 3/8". That low clip matters, because the finer the drawing the shorter the pile has to be for the detail to survive, and here the small flower heads and the hairline vines stay crisp instead of blurring. The back shown in the last photograph gives the honest picture: rows sitting straight and tight, knot definition clear enough to count, selvedges hand-overcast and the fringe part of the warp rather than sewn on. Workshops of this standard produce some of the most consistent hand-knotted goods being made today, and in a piece this size, brand new and never walked on, you get the full pile height and the complete working life of the rug ahead of it.
