The field reads almost black under normal light, and against that darkness the workshop has drawn thousands of small rose, apricot and ivory blossoms on thin gold vines, all converging on a burgundy and ivory medallion at the center. The pile is a wool and silk blend, and the silk has been used deliberately: it sits in the petals and leaf tips, so the flowers catch light and shift as you walk past while the black ground stays matte and deep. It is new, unused and in perfect condition, with even pile, straight sides and full hand-tied fringe at both ends, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is entirely hand-knotted. Design and Motifs

The drafting follows the classic Tabriz medallion formula, and it follows it strictly. At the center sits a small ivory cartouche holding a single sage rosette, ringed by a burgundy lobed medallion filled with its own miniature garden of blossoms, then finished with slender burgundy pendants top and bottom. Radiating out from that core, the black field carries a dense, perfectly mirrored network of curved vines, 8 petal rosettes, half palmettes, serrated leaves and small rosebuds, drawn curvilinear rather than angular, which is only possible at a fine knot count. The 4 corners break into large ivory spandrels that carry their own scrolling arabesques and a soft taupe brown cartouche, giving the eye a place to rest before it reaches the border. The main border is burgundy, wide and confident, with alternating palmettes and leafy acanthus scrolls, framed on both sides by ivory guard stripes of linked flowerheads and a narrow outer stripe. Nothing in the layout is improvised: the corners resolve cleanly, the border repeats meet properly at each turn, and the mirror symmetry holds across both the length and the width.

Color Palette

The field is a true near-black, with the faintest blue cast in raking light along the selvage and fold, and it functions here as a stage rather than a color. Everything else is built on top of it. The floral work runs through a soft, slightly faded range: dusty rose, antique pink, salmon, apricot, pale peach and cream, with the occasional powder blue petal dropped in for relief. Leaves and stems carry the green in the palette, an olive to sage tone that stays quiet and keeps the flowers from reading as candy. The burgundy is a deep oxblood, used in only 3 places, the medallion ring, the corner cartouches and the main border, so those elements lock together visually across the whole 9 by 13 surface. Ivory does the framing work, in the spandrels, the guard stripes and the fringe. Because the silk sits in the lighter tones, the pinks and creams lift and shimmer against the matte black wool, and the rug will look noticeably warmer under lamplight in the evening than it does under daylight.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This is a Sino-Tabriz, made in China by workshops that adopted the Tabriz cartoon system and weave to it with real discipline. The back photograph tells the story: small, tight, even knots on a cotton foundation, clean rows with no packing irregularities, and the design legible from the reverse, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted rug. The pile is clipped low and sheared level, which is what allows the fine curved linework in the vines and the tiny rosettes to stay crisp instead of blurring. Wool carries the structure and the dark ground, while the silk content is concentrated in the highlight colors for sheen rather than spread thin across the whole surface. Selvages are overcast in dark wool and the ends are secured with full, straight cotton fringe. Practically, it is a hard-wearing rug: dense construction, a dark field that hides everyday traffic, and a low pile that vacuums easily, which is why this format works so well under a dining table or across a formal living room.
