Hand-knotted in China to a classic Tabriz cartoon, this 11'7" x 17'6" rug carries a single continuous ivory field from one end of a large room to the other, with no seam, no join and no break in the repeat. The pile is a full 3/8" of wool on a cotton foundation, which gives the rug real weight and lets it lie dead flat the moment it is rolled out. The knotting is even and tight enough that the reverse reads almost as clearly as the face, and the fringes and selvedges are still crisp because the rug has never been on a floor. It is brand new and never used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. The whole field is given over to an all over floral system: thin arcing vines that loop into linked ovals, each loop filled with a large rosette or a layered palmette and flanked by curved split leaves and small 5 petal blossoms. The drawing is mirrored on both the long and short axes, so the pattern reads as a single ordered composition rather than a random scatter, and the vine lines stay curved and unbroken through every turn, which is the test of a well drawn Tabriz design. Three borders frame it. The wide main border alternates upright palmette bouquets with smaller rosettes over a ground of tiny leaf sprigs, the inner and outer guard bands run a lighter meander of roses and paired leaves, and the corners resolve cleanly with the pattern turning rather than being cut off. The close-up photographs show how finely the outlines are drawn, with brown and dark red contour lines only a knot or two wide holding each flower in shape.

A Warm Ivory Field Against Berry Red

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than to a cold white, and it holds light well across such a large surface. Against it the flowers work through a muted, slightly dusty palette: rose and old salmon, brick and deep berry red, olive and sage green, soft gold, and small touches of chalky pale blue in the flower centers. The vine lines themselves are picked out in a pale sky blue and a chocolate brown, and that thin blue tracery is what keeps the ivory ground from looking empty. The main border is a deep berry red, dark enough at the edges of the photographs to read almost black cherry, which anchors the rug and makes the ivory field appear even lighter by contrast. Between the field and that red band sits a celadon and sage green guard stripe with a thin salmon line, an unusual and very attractive choice that softens the jump from light to dark. Sino Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Sino Tabriz means exactly what it says: a Tabriz drawing, woven in China on a cotton warp and weft with a wool pile, entirely by hand on the loom. Chinese workshops have been weaving these fine floral cartoons for the export market for decades, and the better ones hold a high enough knot count to carry curved vinery and multi tone shading without the flowers turning blocky, which is precisely what you see here. The wool is dense and lustrous, cropped to 3/8" so the pattern stays sharp, and the pile has enough body to take furniture in a heavily used room. At 11'7" x 17'6" this is a true palace format, and pieces in the oversized rugs range are rarely woven to this standard of finish.
