5'9" x 8'9" Sino Tabriz Rug | Black Floral Medallion with Ivory Border | Brand New
A black ground with this much flower work in it is unusual, and it is the first thing you notice when this rug is rolled out. Hand-knotted in China in the Sino Tabriz manner, it measures 5'9" x 8'9", a practical footprint that covers a seating group or a small dining table without crowding the walls. The pile is wool, clipped close at 3/8 inch so the drawing stays sharp, knotted on a cotton foundation with hand-tied fringe at both ends. It has never been on a floor: the nap still stands up evenly, the selvedges are tight, and the original Authentic Hand Knotted tag is still attached, as shown in the last photograph. Every rug we sell, including this one, ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece and not a machine-made reproduction. If you want the formality of a fine floral Oriental rug without the antique price, this is the kind of weaving that does it.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the classic Sino Tabriz formula, drawn with real discipline. At the center sits a round medallion filled with an 8 petal rosette on a pale ivory ground, ringed by rose-red lobes and ivory cloudband scrollwork that turns the whole center into a radiating star. Four corner spandrels answer it in matching ivory and rose, so the eye reads a clear medallion and corner structure even though the black field around it is packed edge to edge with blossoms. That field is an all-over vine system: curling stems, serrated sage leaves, open roses, small palmettes and tiny four-petal flower heads set in little red squares that act as punctuation. The main border is an ivory band carrying alternating palmette cartouches and bouquets, framed by two narrow guard stripes of running flowerheads. The curved line work is what sells it, particularly in the close-up of the medallion where the black outlining on the ivory petals is drawn with a single clean knot line.
A Black Field Framed in Ivory and Rose
The field is a true deep black, closer to ink than to charcoal, and it reads solid rather than mottled because the wool takes the dye evenly. Against it, the flowers come forward in warm antique tones: dusty rose and salmon petals, soft apricot, pale champagne ivory, and a muted lilac grey that shows up in some of the smaller blossoms. Leaves and stems are sage and olive green with brown shading, which keeps the field from going pink. The medallion lobes and the small field squares carry a brick rose red, the deepest color on the rug after the black. The wide border shifts the whole balance: a creamy ivory to light beige ground that lightens the perimeter and makes the black center look framed, with the same rose, apricot and sage repeated in the border flowers so the palette ties together. In daylight the black turns slightly warmer and the ivory reads almost sand; under lamplight the contrast tightens and the rose tones glow. This is a rug that will anchor a room of greys, creams, walnut wood or black lacquer.
Sino Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Sino Tabriz describes a weaving category, not a town: Chinese workshops that took up the Tabriz medallion and all-over floral vocabulary and wove it at a fine knot count on cotton warps. The good ones, and this is one of them, are judged on exactly what a buyer can see here: how cleanly the curved vine turns, how round the medallion actually is, and whether the fine detail survives the clip. A low 3/8 inch pile is deliberate on a design this busy, because a longer nap blurs the small flowerheads and the black outlining. The back photograph shows the knot nodes running straight and even across the width, with no pulled rows or uneven tension, and the fringe is original and full. Wool at this pile height on a tightly woven cotton foundation also wears extremely well, which matters on a rug sized for a seating area or a dining table where chairs move. Brand new, never used, and one of the most usable formal floral Oriental rugs we stock in this size range.
