11'10" x 17'8" Oversize Jaipur Rug | All Over Floral on a Black Field | Brand New, Never Used

This is a big, serious floor piece: 11'10" x 17'8" of hand-knotted wool in the Jaipur manner, with a black ground carrying a continuous garden of gold, amber and green foliage from end to end. It has never been used, the pile stands at a full 3/8 inch, and the wool has the glassy sheen you can see in the close-up photographs, where a single leaf shifts from olive to bronze as the light crosses it. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all over floral design built on a mirrored vertical axis: broad serrated sickle leaves sweep out from the centerline, large open palmettes and blown roses sit at the crossing points, and smaller buds, curling acanthus and 8 petal rosettes fill every remaining inch of ground. Look at the center of the field in the close-ups and you find a single rosette held inside a ring of leaves, the one moment of stillness in a pattern that otherwise never stops moving. The border scheme runs 4 bands deep: a narrow outer guard, a gold main border of alternating peonies and leaves, a fine reciprocal inner guard, and then a second wide floral band framing the field, which is unusual and gives the rug a drawn, almost tapestry-like frame at this size. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, with no straight lines anywhere in the composition, and the corners of both borders resolve cleanly, which is the tell of a properly cartooned workshop piece rather than an improvised village weave.

A Black Ground Lit From Within

The ground is black, deep and even, with a faint aubergine warmth where the light rakes across the pile. Against it the weaver has laid one of the richest palettes you will see on a dark field: old gold and saffron in the main border, burnt amber and apricot through the larger blossoms, soft rust and salmon in the petal edges, and at least 3 distinct greens, a dark bottle teal, a dusty sage and a yellow olive, carrying the leaves. Small notes of cream and pale straw outline the flower hearts and keep the whole thing from going muddy. Because the wool takes a high shine, the gold tones read like metal thread from one direction and settle into honey and bronze from the other. The practical effect in a room is that a black rug this large never feels heavy: the field recedes and the foliage floats, so the space reads warm rather than dark.

Jaipur Weaving and the Quality of the Knot

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great modern hand-knotting centers, and India is now where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is actually made. This rug shows why.
