7'3" x 11'2" Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Field, Indigo Medallion, Ivory Lattice Ground | Excellent Condition
This is the classic northwest Persian formula done properly: a deep red field drawn as an octagonal panel, a dark indigo medallion sitting dead center, and an ivory lattice ground filling the 4 corners around it. What separates it from village work is the discipline of the drawing, with every palmette, vine and curled leaf mirrored across both axes and the medallion pendants landing exactly on the long centerline. At 7'3" x 11'2" it sits comfortably under a full seating group or a 8 to 10 seat dining table, which puts it squarely in the most useful band of large Persian rugs. The 3/8" wool pile is even end to end, the sides are straight, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The center medallion is a lobed indigo cartouche with a cream and rose rosette at its heart, ringed by small blossoms and pale vine work, and finished at top and bottom with pointed pendants that repeat the same palette in miniature. Around it the red field carries an all over spread of palmettes, serrated leaves, rosettes and fine flowering stems that never quite touch, so the ground stays open and legible rather than crowded. The octagonal outline of the field is the clever part: instead of standard corner spandrels, the weaver set the red panel inside a continuous ivory ground filled with a tiny repeating cross lattice, which reads almost like a woven trellis in the close-up photo. Framing everything is a wide indigo border of alternating palmettes and curling leaf sprays, flanked by narrow guard stripes of running vine and a delicate reciprocal edge.
Tomato Red, Dark Indigo and Ivory
The field is a warm tomato red with a faint cherry cast where the light catches the pile, saturated but not harsh, and it holds the room the way the best red and burgundy Persian rugs do. Against it the medallion and main border run a true dark indigo, deep enough to read as near black at a distance and then open up into blue as you get closer. The ivory lattice ground is the quiet third color, a soft chalk cream that lifts the whole composition and keeps the red from feeling heavy. Inside the motifs the weaver worked a genuinely wide secondary palette: sea green and teal in the leaves, salmon and dusty rose in the palmettes, straw gold, pale sky blue and small touches of clean white in the rosette centers. Nothing here is loud; the accents do the work of making the red look richer.
Woven in Tabriz, Northwest Persia
Tabriz sits in the far northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, the place where cartoon based workshop production, the Raj counting system and the symmetrical Turkish knot all came together. Weavers there work from a drawn cartoon on a vertical loom over a cotton warp and weft, which is why Persian Tabriz rugs hold their rectangle so well and why a medallion this large stays perfectly centered across 11 feet of length. The handle on this piece is firm and compact, the back is tight and even, and the 3/8" wool pile has that slightly crisp Tabriz finish that resists crushing under furniture legs. It is a weave built for daily use rather than display, which is exactly why these rugs keep turning up in excellent shape decades after they left the loom.
