8'1" x 11'11" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Field with Red Medallion | Excellent Condition

This 8'1" x 11'11" Tabriz was woven in northwest Persia on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" wool pile, and it is the kind of room-size piece that settles a formal space without shouting. The golden ivory field is framed by an octagonal inner outline, filled edge to edge with flowering vine, and anchored by a brick red medallion at the center. The pile is even, the selvedges are sound and the drawing holds its symmetry from end to end, which is why it grades in excellent condition. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Tabriz medallion and corner, drawn with more incident than most. A red central medallion built from stepped lobes carries an ivory and navy rosette at its heart, with slender pendants reaching north and south toward two smaller red cartouche forms. Around it the ivory field runs as a true all-over composition: curled saz leaves, palmettes, cypress-like sprays, small vases and blossoming vine scrolls repeat across all 4 quadrants without ever becoming a flat repeat. The navy spandrels at the 4 corners hold light blue palmettes and pale cartouches that read as inscription panels. The main border is a red ground carrying alternating rosettes, leafy vessels and paired birds, bracketed by ice green and ivory guard stripes with a fine running vine. It is a busy field held together by very disciplined outlining.

The Ivory and Red Palette

The ivory here leans warm, closer to straw and old gold than to chalk white, and it changes with the light through the day: pale and creamy under a window, deeper and almost honeyed in lamplight. Against it the reds do the structural work, a softened brick red in the medallion and main border that has mellowed the way good madder-toned wool does. Navy blue holds the corners and outlines the medallion, giving the whole field its backbone, while sage green, ice blue, rose, terracotta and small notes of ivory white carry the flowers. Tabriz Weaving and Build Quality

Tabriz sits in the far northwest of Persia and has been a workshop city for centuries, weaving on vertical looms to a cartoon rather than from memory, which is exactly why the medallion on this rug is true and the border turns the corner cleanly. Tabriz weavers measure fineness by the Raj system, knots counted across a gereh of roughly 2.75 in, and the density visible in the close-up photograph is a solid workshop weave rather than a village one. The cotton warp and weft keep the rug flat and dimensionally stable at nearly 12 feet long, and the 3/8" wool pile is clipped short enough to keep the fine drawing legible while still giving the rug weight underfoot.
