9'9" x 12'7" Persian Tabriz Rug | Red Field with Ivory Medallion | Excellent Condition

Seen flat from above, this Tabriz holds together as one balanced composition: a clear red field, an ivory and celadon medallion set dead center, and four corner spandrels that carry the same vinework outward to the border. At 9'9" x 12'7" it belongs with the 10x13 Persian rugs that anchor a full seating group or a long dining table with the chairs pulled back. The pile is wool at 3/8", knotted on a cotton foundation, and the surface still has the even nap and quiet sheen you can see in the floor photograph. Design and Motifs

The center holds a rounded rosette medallion filled with small blossoms and curling leaves, finished with a scalloped ivory outline. Above and below it sit 2 slender lozenge pendants, each drawn like a miniature of the medallion itself. The red field between them is not left empty: it is scattered with upright flower sprays, small bouquets and delicate stems that keep the open ground alive without crowding it. The 4 spandrels are large and deeply lobed, packed with arabesque vine, palmettes and split leaves that read cream, sage and taupe against the red. Framing all of it is a wide dark border carrying alternating palmettes and serrated leaves, supported on both sides by narrow guard stripes of running vine and rosettes. The corner close-up shows how cleanly the drawing turns at the angles, which is the test of a competent Tabriz cartoon.

Crimson Red, Ivory and Near-Black Navy

The field is a true cherry red, warm rather than orange, and it shifts a shade lighter or deeper depending on which way the nap is brushed. Against it the medallion and spandrels work in ivory and cream, softened with celadon and sage green, a dusty taupe and small touches of salmon and powder blue. The main border reads as a very dark navy that goes almost black in ordinary room light, which is what makes the red look as bright as it does. Fine outer stripes of red and ivory hold the whole frame together, and the guard bands on the border close-up show pale green grounds with rose and wine rosettes. It is a classic red, ivory and black palette that sits comfortably with dark wood, brass, leather and off-white walls.

Tabriz Weaving in Northwest Persia

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, working from drawn cartoons and measuring its own fineness by the Raj system, the number of knots counted across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches. That workshop discipline is what you see here: a symmetrical medallion, corners that mirror each other, and a border that meets itself correctly at all 4 turns. Tabriz weavers pair a firm cotton warp and weft with hard-wearing highland wool, so a room-size piece like this one keeps its rectangle on the floor and takes traffic well rather than rippling. The clipped 3/8" pile is typical of the city's floor rugs, low enough to show the drawing sharply and dense enough to sit flat under furniture.
