9'9" x 12'7" Persian Tabriz Rug | Berry Red Medallion & Paisley Border | Excellent Condition

This is a full room Persian Tabriz at 9'9" x 12'7", hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" wool pile that still stands up evenly across the whole field. The drawing is the classic city formula handled with real control: a lobed navy medallion anchored dead center, an open berry red field filled edge to edge with flowering vine, and a wide navy border packed with paisley. It is one of the genuinely usable proportions among 10x13 Persian rugs, big enough to carry a sofa group or a 10 seat table without the furniture crowding the medallion. Condition is excellent, with clean selvedges, straight sides and full ivory fringe as shown in the detail photographs. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording size, origin, materials and weave.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a layered medallion: an 8 petal rosette core set in a salmon pink cartouche, wrapped by a navy lobed frame and finished with small cypress and tulip finials top and bottom. Two navy pendants extend along the long axis, and the 4 corners carry quarter spandrels that repeat the same floral vocabulary so the eye reads the composition as one piece rather than as separate panels. Around the medallion the field is a continuous curvilinear scroll of palmettes, serrated leaves, rosettes and small boteh, drawn with the flowing line Tabriz workshops are known for and mirrored precisely across both axes. The main border is the highlight: large pink and ivory paisley leaves alternating with palmettes on navy, framed inside and out by narrow ivory and pale green guard stripes of running rosettes, with the outermost edge finished in plain berry red wool.

Color Palette in Detail

The field is a deep berry red with a cool raspberry cast, a shade that photographs brighter in close-up than it reads on the floor, where the wool's natural luster pulls it toward a saturated claret. Against it the navy blue of the medallion and border is almost ink dark, which is what gives the rug its depth and keeps the busy field from looking restless. Ivory does the structural work, outlining the medallion lobes, carrying the guard stripes and lighting up the paisley interiors so the border pattern stays legible from across a room. Scattered through the vine work are soft sage and bottle greens, warm olive and camel browns, blush pink, and the occasional spark of saffron yellow on a single flower head. If you are shopping for depth rather than pastel, this sits squarely in the red and burgundy Persian rugs family and works with dark wood, brass and oiled leather.

Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the commercial and technical center of Persian weaving for centuries, the town where the curved line, the cartoon drawn medallion and the measured Raj system were refined. Weavers there count knots per gereh across the width, and the workshop discipline shows in a rug like this one: the medallion lands true to center, the borders turn the 4 corners without the pattern being squeezed, and the two halves of the field mirror each other knot for knot. The pile is tough highland wool clipped at 3/8", dense enough to resist crushing under furniture yet with enough luster to shift tone as you walk around it, all tied onto a cotton foundation that keeps a rug this size lying flat and square. That combination of accurate drawing and hard wearing wool is exactly why Tabriz pieces stay in families for generations.
