9'9" x 12'7" Persian Tabriz Rug | Indigo Geometric Medallion on Red | Excellent Condition

This 9'9" x 12'7" Persian Tabriz is the kind of room size piece that anchors a house rather than decorates it: a deep red field, a wide dark indigo border, and a single octagonal medallion carried in ivory and indigo at the center. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, cropped evenly so the drawing stays crisp from corner to corner, and the condition is excellent with no wear, no repair and full even pile across both ends. Laid out it covers a true 10x13 Persian rug footprint, wide enough to carry a full seating group or a 8 chair dining table with the chairs pulled back. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic town format: one large stepped octagonal medallion, a small red lozenge at its heart, and 4 ivory spandrels closing the corners of the field. The medallion is filled with serrated ivory palmettes and split leaves that radiate outward, a Heriz-style geometric vocabulary drawn here with the tighter hand and cleaner line of a Tabriz loom. Around it the red field is packed with angular vine work, cypress forms, vases, rosettes and hooked leaves, and the top and bottom of the medallion carry small gold pendant cartouches. The main border runs a repeating sequence of indigo palmettes and boteh alternating with ivory and salmon rosettes, framed by narrow floral guard stripes that reverse the color order. It reads as one of the more disciplined geometric Persian rugs of this type, with every quarter of the field mirroring correctly.

Color: Tomato Red, Dark Indigo and Ivory

The field is a warm tomato red with a faint madder glow where the light crosses the pile, not a flat modern red and not a brown brick. Against it the medallion and the main border sit in dark indigo, deep enough to read almost aubergine in the close-up photographs and dark enough to give the red field a hard edge to work against. Ivory does the drawing: the spandrels, the palmettes inside the medallion and a good part of the border rosettes are worked in an unbleached cream that keeps the whole piece from going heavy. Salmon and soft peach appear in the outer guard stripe and in the lotus heads of the border, and small amounts of pine green, sky blue, saffron gold and aubergine punctuate the leaves and flower centers. It is a red and navy rug at ten feet away and a 10 color rug at arm's length.

Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving city for centuries, working on vertical looms with a hook tool that lets the weavers keep long runs of knotting square and consistent. That discipline shows here in the straight selvages, the even 3/8" clip and the way the geometric drawing repeats without drift over nearly 13 feet of length. The wool of the region is tough and slightly lustrous, which is why a Tabriz of this weight takes daily traffic for generations rather than years, and the cotton foundation gives the rug the weight and body to lie dead flat without a pad fighting it.
