7'6" x 10' Sarouk Mohajeran Design Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral Field | Lustrous Wool, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted rug drawn in the Sarouk Mohajeran style, with a deep navy blue field carrying flowering sprays, willow trees and boteh across the whole surface. The pile is lustrous wool on a cotton foundation, the weave is dense and even, and the 7'6" x 10' footprint lands right in the most usable 8x10 area rug size for a sofa group or a six seat table. If you want the difference between this kind of piece and other weaving traditions spelled out, our guide on what makes an Oriental rug different is worth reading. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over composition rather than a heavy centered layout. A small lozenge medallion sits at the center, filled with a single rosette and ringed by cream petals, and everything around it is built from detached flowering sprays: 2 large weeping willow trees on the long axis, curled acanthus leaves cradling a diamond bud, clusters of red blossoms on fine stems, and large paisley boteh tucked into the 4 corners of the field. The drawing is symmetrical from end to end but never mechanical, and the open navy ground between motifs is what gives the pattern its lift. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide brick red main border of alternating ivory rosette cartouches and slate blue wheel flowers, flanked by cream vine guards and narrow reciprocal minor stripes, with a navy outer edge and hand-tied ivory cotton fringe closing both ends.

A Navy Field With Red, Cream and Olive

The ground reads as a deep midnight navy blue, close to ink in low light and showing a soft indigo sheen where the wool catches the light in the close-up photos. Against it the palette is warm and controlled: brick red in the medallion and the main border, coral and salmon pink in the blossom heads, clear ivory and cream in the rosettes and vine guards, soft beige in the curling leaves, and a muted olive green that turns up in the leaf sprays and in the wheel flowers of the border. Small touches of slate blue and pale celadon keep the flowers from reading as one mass of red. The contrast between the dark field and the light border is strong enough that the rug anchors a room with pale walls or oak flooring, while the olive and beige keep the whole thing from feeling cold.

Made in India: Weave and Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a clear example of why. The back photo shows tight, regular rows with the pattern reading almost as crisply from the reverse as from the face, which is the honest test of a well woven piece. The wool has the glossy handle that comes from good fleece and a proper wash, the pile is cut low enough to hold the fine stems and leaf tips of the drawing, and the selvedges and fringe are finished cleanly by hand. Being brand new, the rug has its full pile height and full color saturation, so the buyer gets the entire service life of the wool rather than someone else's remainder.
