9'4" x 11'7" Ziegler Design Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral | Fine Silky Wool, Brand New

This is a full room-size Ziegler in the classic proportions, 9'4" x 11'7", hand-knotted in fine silky wool on a cotton foundation and never laid in a home. The drawing is the reason to buy it: a deep navy field carrying a broad, confident all-over floral lattice in rust red, gold, ivory and olive, framed by a wide rust border of ivory rosettes and serrated leaves. The wool has the glossy, slightly waxy handle you can see in the close-up photographs, the kind that takes light differently as you walk past it. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with the weave, materials and measurements recorded. This is one of the easiest large Oriental rug formats to decorate around, and one of the hardest to find in this quality of wool.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver ran a symmetrical all-over floral pattern across the whole field, built from oversized split palmettes, curling arabesque vines and large rosettes that repeat in horizontal registers up the length of the rug. Between the big forms sit smaller details: 8 petal ivory blossoms, olive roundels with blue centers, spade-shaped leaves and a fine red tendril that ties the whole lattice together. Two elongated ivory and gold cartouche forms anchor the center line, one of the details you only notice once the rug is down. The main border carries alternating ivory rosettes and rust-and-blue leaf clusters on a rust ground, with narrow guard stripes of vine and reciprocal cream. The scale is generous throughout, which is exactly what a 9x12 needs, since a small repeat would visually shrink the floor.

Navy, Rust and Gold: The Color Story

The field is a genuine dark royal navy, almost black at the corners and opening into a clear indigo where the light hits it, so the rug reads as a solid dark anchor from across a room and as a layered blue up close. Against that ground the palette is warm and controlled: brick and rust red on the large vine forms and the entire main border, gold to chartreuse on the biggest palmettes with olive green pooling in their centers, and ivory to cream on the rosettes, tendril outlines and guard stripes. Softer notes of salmon, camel and pale pink appear in the smaller flower heads, with a few small hits of sky blue and saffron yellow that keep the repeat from ever looking mechanical. Because the dark field dominates, this rug is very forgiving with cream walls, natural wood and leather, and it handles traffic and shadows far better than a light-field rug of the same size.

Ziegler Weaving and Quality

Ziegler, often spelled Ziglar, is a design tradition of large-scale floral lattices originally commissioned for Western interiors, and it is now woven at its best on hand-knotted looms in Pakistan, where the workshops have the wool supply, the dyeing and the weaver skill to carry it off at room size. This piece shows that work clearly: the back photograph shows an even, tightly packed knot with straight, disciplined rows, the selvages are firm and the fringes are original to the weave. The pile is spun from a long-staple, silky fleece that gives the rug its sheen and will polish rather than dull with use.
