7'8" x 10' Oriental Wool Rug | Burgundy Lavar Floral Trellis | Brand New, Never Used
Seen flat on the showroom floor, this 7'8" x 10' hand-knotted wool rug does exactly what a good Lavar drawing is supposed to do: it fills the whole field with fine floral work and still keeps a clear center. A burgundy ground carries an ivory vine lattice, a small lobed medallion sits dead center, and a very dark main border closes the composition without crowding it. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, clipped at a medium height so the thin vine lines and the tiny rosettes stay legible rather than blurring into each other. It is brand new and never used, with no traffic lanes, no fading and full fringe at both ends, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity as the direct importer. At 92" by 120" it belongs with the 8x10 Oriental rugs that most American rooms are sized for.
Design and Motifs
The field is built on an ogival lattice: slim ivory vines curve out from the center and meet again in pointed arches, splitting the burgundy ground into large panels. Every panel is packed with small rosettes, buds and serrated leaves on hair-thin stems, so the pattern reads as continuous bloom rather than as separated repeats. At the center sits a lobed ivory medallion holding a 6 petal rosette with 4 flanking blossoms, and above and below it the lattice resolves into ivory palmette cartouches. Four larger floral clusters, drawn in ivory and rose with slate shading, anchor the quarters of the field and give the eye something to settle on. The 4 corners carry broad spandrels on a dark ground, each filled with a curling boteh paisley and heavy scrolling leafwork, which is the detail that marks this out as Lavar drawing rather than a plain all over floral. The main border repeats a staggered ivory flower head and vine scroll, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of reciprocal trefoil and small blossoms, finished with a plain burgundy selvedge edge and hand-tied cotton fringe.
Burgundy Field, Ivory Lattice, Near Black Border
The ground is a true burgundy, closer to wine than to fire brick, and it shifts slightly from brick toned in raking light to deep claret when viewed down the pile. The main border is the darkest element in the rug, a near black that reads as aubergine brown up close, and it does most of the work of making the field look brighter than it is. Against those two values the weaver has laid ivory and soft cream for the lattice, the medallion and the border flowers, with salmon and dusty rose in the larger blossoms, sage green and olive in the leaves, and cool slate blue-grey shading inside the palmettes and paisleys. Those blue and green accents are small but they are what keeps the palette from going flat, and they are the reason this piece sits comfortably with both warm woods and cooler grey upholstery. If you are shopping the wider range of burgundy and red rugs, this is the quieter, more formal end of that family rather than a bright tomato red.
Origin, Weaving and Quality
This rug was made in India, and that is a recommendation rather than a caveat: India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and the better workshops there produce curvilinear classical designs like this Lavar at a level of drawing that was once only available from older workshop pieces. The knotting here is even across the full 10' length, the lattice lines stay straight, the border repeat turns the corners cleanly, and the wool has a dry lustre that will only improve as it is walked on. The cotton foundation gives it a flat, stable handle that lays down without buckling, and the wool pile is dense enough for a dining room or a busy living room. Buyers deciding between traditions will find the honest comparison in our guide to the difference between Persian and Oriental rugs, and anyone working in a cleaner contemporary scheme can compare it against our modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs.
