7'9" x 9'10" Serapi Oriental Rug | Rust Field, Ivory Stepped Medallion, Navy Border | Natural Wool, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Serapi measuring 7'9" x 9'10", woven entirely in natural wool on a cotton foundation and finished with hand-knotted ivory fringe at both ends. It sits in the most useful footprint in the house, the 8x10 size range, large enough to carry a full seating group yet still easy to place in a standard room. The drawing is bold and legible from across the floor: a wide rust field, a hexagonal ivory medallion and a deep navy main border, all in clear, confident lines rather than fussy detail. As with every Oriental rug we sell, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with its size, materials and origin recorded.

Design and Motifs

The Serapi layout is built on angular, stepped drawing. A hexagonal ivory medallion holds a navy eight lobed rosette core and a small peach cartouche at the very center, ringed by a band of tiny rust squares. Around it, a stepped rust frame rises and falls in square steps toward the 4 corners, where large ivory spandrels fill the ground with single stemmed flowering sprays, serrated leaves and small birdlike motifs. The open rust field between medallion and spandrels carries gold palmettes, cypress like leaf forms and little comb shaped fillers. The navy main border runs a continuous vine of gold palmettes and rust lotus heads, flanked by narrow beige guard stripes of tiny blossoms and arrowheads. Nothing is crowded, which is what makes the geometric medallion design read so cleanly.

Rust, Ivory, Navy and Gold Throughout

Rust is the main color, a warm brick to terracotta red that shifts slightly across the field as the light moves over the wool, which is the natural abrash of hand-spun yarn rather than any flaw. Against it, the medallion and spandrels are a soft ivory warming to beige and light honey, so the contrast is gentle rather than stark. The main border is a deep inky navy that grounds the whole rug and makes the gold palmettes and rust lotus heads inside it glow. Gold and antique brass run through the field motifs and guard stripes, with small accents of pale sage green, dusty pink and a light sky blue appearing in the flower heads and leaf tips. The closing stripe returns to rust, framing the border in the same tone as the field.

Hand-Knotted in Pakistan: Weave and Wool Quality

This rug was made in Pakistan, home to some of the most consistent hand-knotted weaving being produced today. The workshops there built their reputation on exactly this kind of work: classical Serapi and medallion designs, hand-spun natural wool, soft mellow dye palettes and a tight, even knot across the full width. The folded back shows regular rows and clean color transitions, with no slipped lines where the stepped medallion changes direction. The pile is full bodied and springy underfoot, cut at a medium height so the drawing stays sharp while the wool still has enough body to take years of traffic. The selvages are firmly overcast and the fringe is hand-knotted, both signs of a piece finished properly rather than rushed. In perfect, never used condition at 7'9" x 9'10", it is ready to go straight down on the floor.
