8'10" x 11'7" Zigler Chobi Rug | Rust, Gold and Sage All-Over Vine Design | Brand New, Never Used

This 8'10" x 11'7" Zigler Chobi rug is brand new, never walked on, and woven entirely by hand in Peshawar from hand-spun natural wool on a cotton foundation. It is the kind of piece people are looking for when they search for a traditional Oriental rug with soft, lived-in color rather than hard commercial dyes: a rust field, a wide antique gold border, and ivory drawing that has the chalky, sun-warmed quality collectors associate with the Chobi washes. At a true 106" x 139" it sits squarely in the 9x12 Oriental rugs group, large enough to carry a full seating arrangement or a long table without crowding the walls. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted, along with its measurements, materials and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The angled close-ups read lighter and pinker than the flat overhead photos. That is the wool catching the studio lights along the pile direction, not two different colors. The faint horizontal line visible in a few detail shots is a storage crease in the pile from being rolled, not wear, fade or damage. It relaxes once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field carries a classic all-over design built from thick arabesque vines that sweep out of the 4 corners, cross at the center line and throw off broad serrated leaves, open lotus palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and small cusped blossoms. The drawing is drafted in mirror image on both the long and short axes, so the pattern reads as one continuous garden lattice rather than a repeating panel, and the vines are drawn heavy and generous in the Zigler manner instead of fine and wiry. Along the center of the field sits a small cartouche shaped flower head with a drawn outline, visible in the macro detail shots. The surround is a 3 part system: a wide main border of meandering vine with alternating rust and ivory palmettes, flanked by minor borders of evenly spaced rosettes, then a narrow brick rust outer stripe and a leaf scroll guard. Corners are resolved cleanly, which is a good sign of a drawn cartoon followed carefully from both ends of the loom.

Rust, Gold and Sage: The Color Story

The field is a warm rust, closer to terracotta and brick than to true red, and it moves. Horizontal bands of lighter and deeper rust run across the wool where the dye lots changed, the gentle abrash that keeps a large field from looking flat. Against it the vine work is beige to ivory, warming into apricot and straw gold where the light hits the pile, with pale sage green shading inside many of the leaves and palmettes. The main border shifts to a sandy antique gold with a distinct olive and sage cast along the inner edge, carrying rust and deep burgundy palmettes and small coral rosettes, and it is finished with a brick rust outer stripe and ivory hand-tied fringe. Because the palette is soft and tonal, this rug behaves like a neutral in the room: it warms up pale plaster walls, sits well with walnut and oak, and will not fight patterned upholstery. Buyers shopping rust and terracotta rugs usually want exactly this mellowed warmth.

Peshawar Weaving and the Zigler Chobi Tradition

Peshawar, in northwest Pakistan, is one of the great living centers of hand-knotted weaving, and the Zigler Chobi is its signature product. The design tradition takes its name from the 19th century Ziegler and Company workshops, which commissioned the bold, open Sultanabad style drawing that Western interiors have wanted ever since. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dye recipes used for these colors, which mature gracefully rather than going dull. The wool is hand-spun, so it takes dye unevenly and gives the field its abrash and its slight sheen. The folded corner photo shows the structure clearly: straight, evenly beaten knot rows on a cotton foundation, a medium pile cut low enough to keep the drawing crisp, and tight selvages. No knot count is recorded for this piece, so none is claimed, but the back tells the story a number would: steady tension, consistent rows and a square, flat lying rug built to take decades of real traffic.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
