8'10" x 11'9" Persian Tabriz Rug | Heriz Star Medallion | Copper Brown & Beige, Excellent Condition
This 8'10" x 11'9" Persian Tabriz is a workshop reading of the old Heriz star medallion, drawn with the finer line and softer palette that Tabriz weavers bring to a village pattern. The field is a deep copper brown, the wide main border a warm camel beige, and the whole piece sits in the quiet earth tones that are hard to find in a rug this size. It is a true room-size piece, one of the most useful proportions in the house and the reason so many buyers search specifically for 9x12 Persian rugs. The wool pile is a full 3/8" with no low spots, the ivory fringe is original and hand-tied, and the condition is excellent. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted and Persian.
Please Note About the Photographs:
Several of the angled showroom photos were taken under strong overhead light and read much lighter and flatter than the rug actually is. The first, straight-on photograph is the accurate one for color. In person the field is a richer copper brown and the border a deeper camel gold. This is lighting and pile direction, not fading and not wear.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a large 8 pointed star medallion in ivory and blush, stepped at every point, with a small 8 petal rosette at its heart and 4 sage green cartouches set into the arms, each filled with a rose colored blossom. Around it the copper brown field carries an open all-over drawing of palmettes, serrated leaves, cypress forms and thin vine scrolls, spaced rather than crowded so the ground color does real work. The field itself is shaped as a long hexagon, with the beige spandrels filling all 4 corners and repeating scrolling vine, urn and split-leaf figures. The main border alternates elongated palmette cartouches with rosette panels, flanked by narrow guard bands of small comb and star devices. It is the vocabulary of classic geometric medallion rugs, but softened: the curves are true curves, the leaf tips are drawn rather than stepped, and the corners resolve cleanly.
Copper Brown, Beige and the Accent Colors
The field color is a copper brown that shifts with the light, closer to chocolate where the pile lies away from you and closer to warm cinnamon where it lies toward you. Against it the main border is a full camel beige with a golden cast, and the spandrels a paler sand that lifts the corners. The medallion is the lightest note in the rug, an ivory to peach cream that reads almost pink at the center. Working through the field and border are small quantities of brick rust, faded rose, dusty salmon, olive and a muted sage green, plus deep brown outlines that hold every motif in place. There is no black, no bright red and no hard contrast anywhere, which is exactly why a rug like this settles so easily into rooms built on walnut, oak, leather, cream plaster and linen.
Tabriz Weaving and the Heriz Tradition
Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the region's commercial and design capital for centuries, close enough to the Heriz villages east of the city that patterns travel constantly between them. Heriz village work is angular by nature, usually woven at a coarser count on famously tough local wool. When a Tabriz workshop takes the same star medallion layout, as here, the drawing tightens: the knot count rises, the curved line becomes possible, and the shading is built from many close-related wools rather than a handful of flat colors. The back of this rug shows a clean, regular knot with straight rows and a firm cotton foundation, and the pile has the slight glaze that good northwest Persian wool develops. It is a piece built for daily life in a large room, dense enough to take furniture and traffic for generations.
