8'11" x 11'10" Persian Heriz Rug | Burgundy Field, Ivory Star Medallion | Dense Wool Pile
A room size Persian rug drawn in the Heriz manner, with one broad 8 point star medallion floating on a warm burgundy field and deep camel corner spandrels pulling the eye back to the center. The wool is heavy and tightly packed, cut at a medium pile height that gives the burgundy real depth, and the cotton foundation keeps the rug flat and square on the floor. At 8'11" x 11'10" it falls squarely into the 9x12 Persian rugs footprint, which means all four legs of a sofa and a pair of chairs stay on the wool, or a dining table for 8 clears the border comfortably. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted by hand, knot by knot, in Persia.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The field photographs at different values depending on the light. Under direct showroom lighting and at an angle the ground reads as a brighter red, while the flat overhead and close-up shots show the truer warm burgundy. This is a lighting and pile-direction effect, not fading and not two different dye lots. Wool pile always looks lighter when the nap is viewed from one end and darker from the other.
Design and Motifs
The center is a stepped 8 point star medallion in ivory and beige, ringed by a brown inner cartouche that holds a pink and sage rosette at its heart. Out of the medallion's points grow angular palmettes and serrated leaves, the drawing staying straight-lined and crisp rather than curvilinear, which is exactly what separates this family from the workshop city weaves. Across the burgundy ground, thin vines carry clusters of serrated leaves and small hooked blossoms in sage, camel and rose, filling the space evenly without crowding the medallion. The camel spandrels at all 4 corners repeat the same vocabulary in reverse, and the wide beige main border runs a chain of rosettes and cloud-band scrolls between two narrow guard stripes. If you like geometric Persian rug designs, this is the classic statement of the type.
Warm Burgundy, Beige, Brown and Sage
The field is a warm, slightly brown-leaning burgundy rather than a bright tomato red, the kind of tone that sits well with walnut furniture and warm white walls. Against it, the medallion moves through three values: a pale ivory outer star, a soft beige mid-ring, and a chocolate brown core that carries a dusty rose rosette with sage petals. The corner spandrels are a muted olive brown, warmer than the field and cooler than the border, which gives the composition a quiet third layer instead of a hard red-and-ivory contrast. Sage green and camel do the work in the leaves and vines, with small touches of salmon and rose in the border rosettes. The main border reads as soft golden beige, and the selvage is finished in the same burgundy as the field. Among red and burgundy Persian rugs, this one leans warm and mellow.
Heriz Weaving and Persian Origin
The Heriz tradition comes from the cluster of villages east of Tabriz, below Mount Sabalan, where mineral-rich water and famously tough highland wool produce a pile that resists crushing for generations. Weavers there work from memory and from village drawings rather than a full cartoon, which is why the lines stay angular, the corners step rather than curve, and no two pieces are ever identical. This rug follows that discipline closely, but the leaf and vine drawing is noticeably finer and more controlled than the coarse village standard, and the back shown against the ruler confirms a tight, even knot count with straight rows and no bowing. Cotton warp and weft, wool pile, hand-knotted in Persia, with strong flat ends and clean hand-finished selvages on both long sides.
