Design and Motifs

A single ivory lobed medallion sits dead center, filled with a blue rosette core and four curling cloudband arms, with a small ivory pendant anchored above and below it. Around that the field runs as a continuous all-over floral lattice: arabesque vines, palmettes, serrated leaves and small bud clusters that repeat in mirrored halves along both axes, drawn with the softly curved line that separates Sarouk work from the angular village weaves. The main border is a wide navy band of alternating palmettes and rosettes joined by a thin red vine, flanked on both sides by sky blue guard stripes carrying a running flowerhead, then narrow reciprocal stripes at the very edge. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border drawing turning without the pattern breaking, a small detail that tells you the weaver was following a properly worked cartoon.

A Soft Red Ground Framed in Indigo

The ground is a soft, slightly rosy red rather than a hard tomato tone, and it reads warmer or deeper depending on which way the pile is brushed, exactly as good hand-spun wool should. Against it, the drawing works in two blues: a deep indigo navy that carries the outlines and the main border, and a clear sky blue to teal that fills the leaves, the medallion interior and the guard stripes. Ivory and soft cream do the heavy lifting in the medallion, the border palmettes and the fringe end, keeping the whole thing from going dark. Scattered through the field are the accent notes that give this rug its life: apricot and saffron gold in the leaf clusters, salmon and dusty pink in the small blossoms, and occasional flecks of sage green.
