8'4" x 10'2" Chinese Needlepoint Rug | French Aubusson Fruit Design | Black Ground, Flat Weave Wool
This is a hand-woven Chinese needlepoint in the French Aubusson manner, 8'4" x 10'2", worked stitch by stitch in wool on a cotton ground with no pile at all. The surface sits almost flush with the floor, which is why a piece like this reads as furniture rather than as a rug: chairs slide over it, doors clear it, and the drawing stays as crisp as a painted panel. The whole field is a black orchard, packed edge to edge with grape clusters, lemons, pears and open roses on trailing sage vines, and the same fruit runs again through the wide border between two olive-gold guard stripes. It is in perfect condition, with full body, clean selvages and no restoration. Buyers looking at other 8x10 rugs will find very few flat-woven pieces with this density of drawing. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion and no central axis here. Instead the weaver filled the ground with an all-over fruit and floral design that repeats loosely enough to look gathered rather than stamped. Count the vocabulary and you find at least 6 recurring elements: heavy bunches of round grapes in wine and rose, pale golden lemons and pears drawn with shaded highlights, tight rose blossoms, small cream blossom sprays, oak-shaped leaves, and the thin curling tendrils that tie them together. The leaves alternate between sage, dove blue and soft olive, which keeps the fruit from crowding. At the edge, a single fine outline separates field from border, then the border itself carries the same orchard on a slightly larger scale so the pattern reads clearly from a standing height. Two narrow olive-gold stripes frame the whole thing, and the corners resolve cleanly with a full fruit cluster rather than a cut-off repeat, which is a sign the cartoon was drawn for this exact 8'4" x 10'2" format.
A Black Ground Worked in Orchard Pinks and Sage Greens
The ground is a true black, flat and matte, with none of the blue or brown cast that cheaper dark wool usually shows. Against it the palette is deliberately dusty rather than bright: grapes move through mulberry, dusty rose and a faded raspberry, often shaded within a single cluster so the fruit looks round. The lemons and pears are butter cream and pale wheat with ivory highlights on the near side. Roses are a chalky pink lifting to almost white at the petal tips. Foliage carries the cool half of the scheme, sage green, gray-green and a soft slate blue that photographs as blue-green in close view. Small cream and honey blossom sprays are scattered through as breathing space. The olive-gold guard stripes are the only warm outline in the piece and they pull everything together. On a dark floor this rug reads as a jewel-toned still life; against pale oak, as in these photographs, the black becomes the anchor and the pinks come forward.
Chinese Needlepoint Weaving in the French Tradition
Needlepoint of this kind is made in China for the Western market, drawing directly on the 18th century French Aubusson and tapestry tradition, and the Chinese ateliers have carried that craft at a high level for decades. The technique is entirely different from a knotted Oriental rug: the wool is worked by hand into a cotton canvas one stitch at a time, following a painted cartoon, which is what allows the shading inside a single grape or the gradient along a lemon. Fineness is judged by stitch count rather than knots, and here the stitches are small and even enough that curves stay smooth with no stepping. The back photograph shows the tight, regular reverse and the clean ivory canvas edge, both signs of careful finishing. Because there is no pile to crush, a needlepoint of this weight is a natural choice under a dining table or in a formal sitting room, and at 8'4" x 10'2" it holds a standard 8 chair table comfortably.
