The ground is a warm ivory, the wide main border is a true black loaded with roses and broad leaves, and a dusty rose guard band with a scrolling comma motif runs inside and outside it. The piece has never been used, the back is clean and evenly finished, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as genuine handmade work.

Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic French salon layout. At the center sits a large oval bouquet, roses and lilies gathered with long ribbon-like plumes that fall toward the bottom of the group, and around it a loose open wreath of blossoms and curling leaves reaches out toward the 4 corners of the field. Each end of the ivory ground carries a row of 4 square cameo panels, 8 in total, and every panel holds its own small tied bouquet, no two arranged the same way. Thin rose-taupe bands with a repeating wave motif separate the panels and are locked at each junction by a small cross-hatched square. The main black border is a continuous garland of full-blown roses, magnolia-like blooms, buds and long acanthus leaves, drawn large enough to read clearly from across the room, and the outer guard repeats the comma scroll with small ivory dots. It is a formal composition, but the flowers are painted rather than stylized, which keeps it soft.

Ivory Ground, Black Border and the Full Color Range

The field reads as a warm ivory, closer to unbleached linen than to a cold white, and it gives the whole design its light. Against it the black border is genuinely black, which is what makes the pale flowers jump. The roses run from deep rose pink through soft shell pink to a cream that is almost white, and they are shaded across several tones inside a single bloom. The foliage is a quiet range of sage, olive, moss and a few deep forest greens used sparingly for depth, with tan and camel worked into the ribbon plumes. Scattered through the field are pale lavender and powder blue blossoms that keep the palette from going entirely warm. The guard bands are a muted dusty rose over soft taupe. Needlepoint of this type is made in China, where workshops have specialized for decades in reproducing 18th century French Aubusson and Savonnerie cartoons stitch by stitch in wool on a stretched cotton canvas. The surface is completely flat, built from tiny individual stitches rather than knots, which is why the flowers can be shaded so finely and why the rug lies thin and close to the floor. A panel at 12' x 18' takes several artisans months on one large frame, and the joins have to be planned so the bouquets and the border garland run unbroken, which they do here. The back is faced with black cloth, the standard finish on quality needlepoint, and the tag reads rug number 4089. It is a different craft from a knotted Oriental rug, and among oversized rugs it is one of the few flat options with this much decoration.
