Design and Motifs

The drawing works outward in three clear stages. At the center sits a scalloped cartouche outlined in coral and gold, filled with a spray of open roses, small five petal blossoms and olive leaves, with a few loose buds falling outside the frame as they would in a period tapestry panel. That cartouche floats inside an octagonal panel bordered by a slim chain of roses and daisies, with leafy vines trailing along each long side. Beyond the panel come the pieces that make an Aubusson read as an Aubusson: big curling acanthus cartouches at the head and foot, beaded and dentil bands in coral and cream, and long pale pink ribbon swags looped across the corners as if pinned to the field. The four corners carry full rose bouquets and garland chains that follow the shaped panel line. The main border is a continuous run of scrolling acanthus and crossed ribbon lattice with a rose cluster set in each compartment, and the field is deliberately left open between motifs, which is why a design this busy still feels calm.

Color Palette: Beige, Sage Green and Rose Pink

The field is a warm beige, close to oatmeal, shading toward ivory around the medallion where the weavers lightened the ground to lift the flowers. Scrollwork and cartouche outlines are gold and soft apricot, with a deeper coral used only on the beaded bands and the rose centers so the drawing keeps an edge. The flowers run through the whole rose range: blush, cream, dusty pink and a few dark crimson blossoms, with foliage in olive, moss and a dry khaki green. The main border is a muted sage green, the most restful note in the rug, and the outermost band is a plain golden brown with a terracotta and cream pearl line inside it, which acts as a frame and grounds all the pale tones. The ribbon swags are almost white with a pink shadow. Seen from a doorway the rug reads as one continuous neutral with green and pink warmth inside it, which is why it sits easily with cream upholstery, walnut furniture and painted trim.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Made in China in the Aubusson tradition of central France, where flat tapestry floor panels were woven for salons and chateaux from the 17th century onward. The technique here is the same: dyed wool wefts packed by hand over a cotton warp, no knots and no pile, with each color area built up separately and joined to the next. That method is what allows the shading you can see in the rose petals and the acanthus leaves, where three or four tones of one color sit side by side in a space of an inch. The reverse, shown in the folded corner photos, carries the loose weft tails typical of a genuine hand-woven flat weave and confirms the piece was made on the loom rather than printed or tufted. As an Oriental rug in a European idiom, it is an unusual thing to find at 12' x 18' and in unused condition, and the low profile means it can be used in rooms where a thick rug simply will not fit.
