11'8" x 14'7" Chinese Aubusson Design Needlepoint Rug | Beige Floral Medallion | Never Used

This is a flat needlepoint woven in the Aubusson manner, 11'8" x 14'7" of tapestry work with no pile at all, so the drawing sits on the surface like a painted canvas rather than a knotted carpet. It is a genuinely grand piece, an Oriental rug in the broad sense and a French salon design in spirit, built on a cotton foundation with wool yarn and finished with a cotton tape along the reverse, visible in the close photograph of the back. At this scale it belongs with our oversize 12x15 rugs, covering a full formal room edge to edge. The rug has never been used, carries its original inventory tag B 78825, and ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The composition is pure 18th century French salon drawing. At the center sits a round bouquet of roses, daisies and small buds, ringed by a leafy garland, and that bouquet is framed by a shaped cartouche of scrolling ribbon that swells and curls at each of the 4 sides. Around it a second, larger garland of flowers loops through the open beige ground and ties back into the ribbon with small buckled clasps. The inner field is drawn as a scalloped panel with a serpentine outline, and where it meets the surrounding rust ground the pattern changes entirely: dense tonal acanthus scrollwork, spiral after spiral, with sprays of olive foliage trailing across it. Each of the 4 corners carries a full floral spray, and the border repeats an oval laurel wreath enclosing a small bouquet, set on a cream ground and flanked by curling gold acanthus leaves. The outer edge is a plain brick red band that frames the whole design cleanly.

A Beige Field with Rust, Sage and Rose

The dominant color is a warm beige, closer to sand than to white, reading almost buttery in the detail photographs of the center. Against it the flowers are drawn in rose pink, dusty salmon, soft coral and cream, with the occasional pale blue bud dropped in for contrast, and the foliage runs through sage, olive and a grayed moss green. Surrounding the beige panel is a terracotta rust ground in which the acanthus scrolls are worked a shade or two darker, so the pattern reads as tone on tone rather than as sharp contrast. Gold and old ivory carry the large scrolling leaves at the corners and the ribbon outlines, while the outer border deepens to a brick red that anchors everything. The palette is deliberately soft and slightly faded in feeling, which is exactly what this style calls for, and it sits comfortably with cream walls, dark wood, gilt frames and antique upholstery.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Aubusson is a town in central France whose workshops wove flat tapestry floor coverings for chateaux and salons from the 17th century onward. This piece was made in China, where a number of ateliers took up the needlepoint tapestry technique and now produce the best of this work anywhere, and it follows the French cartoons faithfully. Construction is flat weave rather than knotted: wool yarn worked across a cotton warp, with each color area built up by hand and the joins finished on the reverse, as the back photograph shows. Because there is no pile, the drawing can hold fine curved outlines and subtle color shading that would blur in a thick carpet, and the finished rug is low, dense and easy to place under heavy furniture and dining chairs. At 11'8" x 14'7" it is a room-size piece of real weight, and it has never been on a floor.
