8'8" x 12'5" Modern Indian Rug | Raised Geometric Lattice | Tonal Beige, Cream & Tan
This is a brand new hand-knotted piece from India, worked entirely in one tonal family and given its pattern by pile height rather than by contrasting dye. The ground is a low, densely packed beige wool, and the lattice sitting proud of it is carved in cream, so the whole design reads as shadow and light instead of color against color. At 8'8" x 12'5" it covers a standard 9x12 footprint without a border to crop it, which is exactly why this kind of drawing works in a contemporary room: it carries the floor quietly and leaves the furniture to do the talking. It is a good anchor piece among modern and contemporary rugs, and like every rug we import it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Please Note About the Photographs:
Because this rug is one tone with a carved surface, the camera reads it differently from one angle to the next. The overhead studio image looks warmer and more tan, while the close-ups look closer to cream and ivory. Those lighter and darker sweeps are the pile lying in different directions and catching the light, not staining, fading or wear. Walk around the rug at home and the same shimmer will follow you.
Design and Motifs
The field is one continuous grid with no border and no medallion. Rounded octagonal panels sit inside a lattice of carved lines, and where the lines cross, the weaver has built a small stepped cross of 4 squares around a single center block, so each intersection becomes a tiny pixelated rosette. Between them run short carved bars and lone squares that keep the grid from feeling mechanical. Everything is drawn in straight lines and right angles, which places it firmly among geometric rugs rather than anything floral, and because the repeat runs edge to edge it belongs with true all-over design weaving. The close-ups show how the effect is achieved: the raised sections are left at full pile and sheared smooth, while the recessed sections are clipped right down to expose the knot rows, giving a crisp carved edge you can feel with your hand.
A Tonal Palette of Beige, Cream and Tan
The main color is beige, warm rather than grey, with a faint wheat or champagne cast where daylight hits it directly. The carved lattice and the small stepped squares read cream to soft ivory, a half step lighter than the ground, and the difference is enough to draw the pattern without ever becoming a contrast. Tan appears in the deeper passages, mostly along the ends and wherever the pile leans away from the light, and it gives the surface the gentle mottling you see in the wide shots. Set against dark floors, as in the photographs, the rug lifts and looks almost golden; against pale oak it settles into a quiet sand tone. For rooms built on beige and ivory rugs, this is the kind of neutral that adds texture instead of another color.
Hand-Knotted in India
India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and we say that without hedging: the looms there combine serious technical discipline with designers who are willing to work in relief, in tone on tone, and in scale. This piece is knot by knot handwork on a cotton foundation, finished with a flat selvage and no fringe, and the back tag confirms it as a genuine hand woven Oriental rug. Carving a pattern this consistently over nearly 108 square feet is harder than it looks, since every raised line has to hold its width across the full 8'8" span while the weave stays square. The result is a dense, low pile that takes traffic well and a 9x12 format that suits a dining table, a sofa grouping or a large bedroom.
