A quiet, confident piece of contemporary hand-knotted weaving: a Serapi drawing set out as a full panel lattice, worked in a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation. The plum-brown ground is broken up by rank after rank of golden beige roundels, each one ringed in ivory, so the rug reads as texture and warmth from across a room and as fine floral drawing up close. At 8'8" x 11'8" it covers a standard 9x12 footprint with all four legs of a sofa or a 8 seat table resting comfortably on the pile. Design and Motifs

The field is laid out as a strict grid of rounded panels, each holding a soft gold cartouche with a small rosette at its center and paired leaf sprays mirrored above and below. Between the panels the weaver has filled every gap with ivory vine scrollwork, split palmettes and tiny cruciform rosettes, so the lattice never looks empty; the connecting tracery is what gives this Serapi reading its Mughal feel.
