12' x 18' Indian Modern Rug | Wool and Bamboo Silk | Natural Beige

A 12' x 18' carpet hand-knotted in India from wool and bamboo silk, in a single family of beige tones. From a few steps away it reads as a plain floor, faintly streaked; closer up the surface breaks into a loose crosshatch of lines and small blocks, some of them clipped low so the pile catches light where the neighbouring areas do not.

Design

The modern drawing has no border and no centre. Vertical and horizontal strokes cross each other across the whole field in irregular bands, thickening into rough squares and short ladder-like runs, then thinning out into open ground. The close photographs show where the effect comes from: panels of flat, basket-textured weave set against passages of longer, glossier pile, so the pattern is carried as much by height and sheen as by colour. It is drawn freehand rather than repeated, which suits the rectangular format at this length, with no seam of repetition running down the room.

Colour

The ground is natural beige, moving between a pale oatmeal in the lit areas and a warmer greige where the pile lies away from the light. Over it the strokes read as a light taupe, slightly browner and a shade deeper than the field, while the clipped blocks come up almost ivory with a cool silver cast. There is no third colour and nothing bright: the whole rug works on two or three steps within one tone, so the pattern shifts noticeably depending on which way the pile is brushed.

Making

Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation in India, with a pile of wool and bamboo silk. The wool carries the matte, lower-lying ground and the bamboo silk carries the sheen, which is why the surface changes so much between the overhead shot and the raking-light details. The edges are finished flush without fringe, and the back shown at the folded corner is clean and even. The rug is new and in perfect condition.
