8'9" x 11'9" Agra Rug | Ivory and Light Blue All Over Kashan Floral | New Hand-Knotted Wool
This is a brand new, never used Agra weave from India, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classic Kashan floral manner. The ivory field carries an all over vine and palmette layout, the wide border runs in a soft light blue, and the whole piece reads calm rather than busy, which is exactly why this style of Oriental rug keeps selling to designers. At 8'9" x 11'9" it lands in the most usable large format there is, close to a standard 9x12 rug, so it will float a full seating group or cover a dining table with chairs pulled out. Every rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, materials and origin.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over floral design with no central medallion, built from a lattice of thin brown vines that loop corner to corner and carry serrated palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, split leaves and small cypress-like blossoms. Two large fan palmettes sit on the long center axis and anchor the repeat without dominating it. The border system runs in three parts: a wide light blue main band of linked flower heads and curling saz leaves, a camel tan guard stripe of small cruciform blossoms on each side, and a narrow ivory outer line that lifts the whole frame. The drawing follows the vocabulary of Persian Kashan rugs, with curved stems and precise corner resolution, but the open ivory ground gives it a lighter, more transitional feel than a traditional red Kashan.
A Study in Ivory, Light Blue, Green and Gold
Ivory is the main color and it is not a flat white. The ground shifts between warm cream and a pale sand tone as the pile catches light, which is visible in the rolled pile photo and keeps the field from looking printed. The border is a soft light blue with a faint green cast, closer to a weathered seafoam than a bright sky blue, and it reads as a quiet frame rather than a contrast stripe. Inside the flowers the palette opens up: sage and olive green leaves, antique gold and honey palmettes, muted rose and terracotta petals, small camel tan passages in the guard bands, and tiny points of deep navy at the flower centers that give the pattern definition from across the room. The overall effect is pale, warm and neutral-friendly, which makes this an easy rug to live with over wood, stone or pale carpet.
Agra Weaving and Build Quality
Agra has been a center of fine hand-knotted weaving since the Mughal court workshops, and today India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted rugs are made. This piece shows it: the back is tight and even, the knot rows are regular from end to end, the borders turn the corners cleanly, and the selvedges and hand-tied fringes are finished without shortcuts. The wool pile is dense and springy with a soft handle and a light sheen, the sort of yarn that burnishes rather than matts in a traffic lane. Combined with the cotton foundation, that build gives the rug the weight and flatness to lie properly in a large room, and it is brand new, so the full life of the pile is still ahead of it.
