8'9" x 11'9" Modern Oriental Rug | Red Field with Checkerboard Panels | Wool & Silk, Made in India

This 8'9" x 11'9" rug is a hand-knotted contemporary piece from India, built on a cotton foundation with a wool pile lifted by silk-accented drawing. It reads as one confident composition rather than a repeating pattern: a deep red open field, a wide camel beige surround, and a handful of asymmetric panels and flowering stems placed the way a painter would place them. As a piece of weaving it is a true Oriental rug, knot by knot on the loom, and as a piece of design it sits squarely with our modern and contemporary rugs. At this scale it covers a standard seating group comfortably, which puts it in the most requested range of all, the 9x12 rugs group. It is brand new, never used, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The soft lines and shadows visible across the red field in several photos are fold marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

The field is left mostly open, and the drawing works by contrast. Three rectangular panels of fine brown and ivory stripes sit at different points in the field, each one interrupted by a column or band of checkerboard squares, 3 rows deep in the larger panels, in sage green, apricot and pale gold. A fourth panel is plain, a quiet rectangle of brushed olive and sage with no pattern at all, acting as a visual rest. Between the panels climb 2 long flowering stems, drawn with a thin green vine and topped by broad ragged leaves and open lily heads in gold and cream, one reaching up toward the top of the field and one sweeping down the opposite side. The composition is deliberately off balance, so no 2 corners read the same, and the wide plain border carries no pattern whatsoever, which keeps all the attention inside the field. It is an Art Deco sensibility executed with the discipline of a hand-knotted weave.

Color: Deep Red with Camel, Sage and Gold

The field is a deep saturated red that leans toward true crimson in the light and toward a darker wine tone in the shadows, and because the field is open you see the wool breathe across it, with faint tonal movement from one row to the next that only hand-dyed, hand-knotted work produces. Around it runs a broad camel beige border with a warm golden cast, clean and unpatterned, which cools the red and gives the whole rug a softer outline than a dark border would. Inside the panels the palette shifts to earth tones: chocolate and coffee brown stripes against bone and oat, then blocks of muted sage green, apricot, honey gold and pale butter, all of them low in saturation so they sit beside the red without competing. The flowering stems are worked in cream, gold and soft olive green with a silky sheen that catches the light from one direction and turns matte from the other. If this palette is your direction, our red and burgundy rugs collection is the place to compare.

Origin and Weaving Quality: Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted rugs are now made, and we say that without hedging: the workshops there have the skilled hands, the wool supply and the dye knowledge to execute a designer composition like this one properly. The back of this rug, visible in the detail photographs, shows a tight and remarkably even knot grid on its cotton foundation, with the panel edges and the thin curved vines resolving cleanly rather than stepping, which is the tell of a well-drawn graph and a disciplined weaver. The pile is a dense wool with silk-accented highlights in the florals and the lighter blocks, giving 2 different surface finishes in one rug, matte underfoot and lustrous where the design wants to shine. Pile height is low and firm, which suits a room with furniture on it, and the ends are finished with a natural fringe and a plain selvage. For a new piece at 8'9" x 11'9", this is serious weaving rather than a decorative shortcut.
