8'9" x 11'6" Oriental Agra Rug | Multi-Color Patchwork Panel Design | Fine Wool Pile, Made in India
This 8'9" x 11'6" rug is a single hand-knotted piece built to look like a patchwork of older panels, each small rectangle and triangle carrying its own fragment of a classical Agra drawing. Nothing here is stitched or assembled: every panel, every tiny border and every change of color was knotted in one continuous weave on a cotton foundation, with a 3/8" wool pile that still has its original body and sheen. At 105" x 138" it lands in the useful 9x12 bracket, large enough to carry a seating group or a full dining table and still show its drawing around the edges, and it works beautifully as a quieter alternative to a single medallion Oriental rug. Condition is excellent, and the rug ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
The field is divided into dozens of irregular blocks, and each one behaves as if it were cut from a different antique. One panel holds a stepped serrated medallion in deep red, another an ivory 8 petal rosette floating on chocolate brown, another the pointed arch of a prayer niche, another a short run of guard border with its own rosette chain. In between you will find vases of flowers, curling cloudband and vine fragments, serrated leaves, boteh shapes, small stepped crenellations and angular tribal stars, all drawn in the flat, confident village manner that makes Agra patchwork work so readable from across a room. The clever part is the rhythm: large calm blocks of plain ivory or camel sit beside dense, busy quarters, so the eye keeps moving without ever getting tired. A narrow framing border of small repeating floral heads runs around all 4 sides and pulls the whole mosaic together, and the ivory fringe at each end finishes it cleanly.
A Warm Multi-Color Palette of Rust, Sage and Gold
The overall reading is warm and softly faded rather than bright. Camel, honey gold and pale ivory carry most of the ground, with rust and terracotta blocks supplying the heat and a scatter of deep burgundy red panels acting as anchors across the surface. Against those warm tones sit the cooler notes that give this rug its charm: muted sage and celadon green, a dusty soft green that reads almost grey in daylight, and a gentle sky blue that appears in whole panels and in small flowering sprays. Dark chocolate brown and a brownish aubergine provide the deepest shadows, usually framing the ivory rosettes so they stand out. Outlines are drawn in brown, brick and ivory rather than hard black, which keeps the contrast soft, and because the wool takes light differently from panel to panel the same color can look sunlit in one block and shaded in the next. It is a genuinely versatile mix for warm neutral rooms, terracotta floors, walnut furniture and off-white walls.
Agra Drawing, Woven in India
Agra is one of the great names in rug drawing, the city of the Mughal court workshops, and its vocabulary of broad palmettes, serrated leaves and generous open grounds is what this patchwork quotes panel by panel. The rug itself is honestly made in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work now comes from. The weavers there have the bench skill, the hand-spun wool supply and the dye knowledge to produce a piece like this at a level that holds up next to far older work: a firm, even back as seen in the folded corner, a tight knot count for a 3/8" pile, straight selvedges and squared corners on a rug nearly 11'6" long. Wool of this grade also wears in rather than out, so a busy multi-color field like this one only gets better looking with traffic, which is exactly why patchwork designs have become a decorator staple in large rooms.
