9' x 12' Modern Oriental Rug | Gray Abstract Wool and Silk | Brand New, Made in India

This is a brand new hand-knotted piece in a true room size, and it behaves like art rather than decoration. Across 9' x 12' the weavers have drawn a field of soft, spreading shapes in gray, silver and charcoal that look like water drying on stone or ink bleeding through paper, with no border to interrupt the movement. The pile is a wool and silk blend, so the lighter shapes carry a quiet shine while the darker ground stays matte, and the whole surface changes as you walk around it. It is a practical choice for a 9x12 area rug that has to sit under furniture and still hold the eye. Every rug we ship, including this one, leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion, no border and no repeating unit here. The drawing is a continuous, all over abstraction of irregular pooled forms, some the size of a hand, some stretching a foot or more, outlined by thin dark contours that break and resume like a coastline on a map. One end of the field is denser and darker, the shapes crowding together into near solid charcoal, and the pattern thins as it travels so that the opposite end reads mostly pale ivory with scattered islands of gray. Fine horizontal striation runs through the ground, a deliberate abrash effect that gives the composition a brushed, painterly texture. Look closely at the detail photos and you can see how the artist has layered three or four values inside a single shape, dark gray core, mid gray halo, blue-gray shadow, ivory edge, which is the kind of shading that only works in a hand-knotted weave where every knot can change color. The result is an modern and contemporary rug design that sits comfortably with mid century furniture, stone floors and plenty of glass.

A Palette of Gray, Silver and Charcoal

The color story is deliberately narrow and very carefully graded. The base is a warm off white that photographs between ivory and pale oatmeal depending on the light, and against it sit at least four distinct grays: a smoky mid gray, a deeper slate, a near black charcoal used only for the thin outlines and the darkest pools, and a cool blue-gray that appears in small drifts and keeps the whole rug from reading brown. Where the silk content sits in the lighter shapes it throws a silvery sheen, so the same patch can look white from one side of the room and soft pewter from the other. There is no red, no gold and no accent color anywhere in the field, which makes this an easy rug to live with: it picks up whatever wood, leather or upholstery tone you put near it instead of fighting it. Buyers shopping grey and charcoal rugs for a light interior will find this one of the more sophisticated readings of that palette, because the grays are mixed from dyed wool rather than printed flat.

Woven in India and Built to Last

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without apology. The weaving villages there have the looms, the spinning, the dye houses and the trained hands to execute a painterly design like this one at a scale of 9 by 12 feet without the drawing drifting out of register. The back photo tells you what you are buying: even rows, a clean cotton foundation, tight knotting and a firmly finished selvage, with the design legible from the reverse the way it should be on a genuine hand-knotted piece. The pile is clipped low so the shading stays crisp underfoot, and the wool and silk mix gives it both durability and that shifting luster. If you are weighing this against a classic city weave, our guide on the difference between Persian and Oriental rug traditions explains exactly where a modern Indian weave like this fits.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
