8' x 10'1" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Antique Tabriz Medallion | Lustrous Dense Wool, Brand New
This is a heavy, tightly packed hand-knotted Oriental rug from the Jaipur workshops of India, drawn after the antique Tabriz medallion format and woven in a lustrous wool that reads almost like silk where the light crosses the pile. Pick up a corner and you feel the weight: short, dense pile on a firm cotton foundation, with hand-tied cream fringe at both ends and no mechanical finishing anywhere on it. The piece has never been on a floor, and at 8' x 10'1" it is the most useful proportion in the house, which is why 8x10 Oriental rugs move faster than any other size we stock. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with its certificate of authenticity, stating the weave, materials, origin and measured size.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a lobed Tabriz-style medallion with a burgundy heart filled by a fine diamond lattice, a small 8 petal rosette cluster at its core, and scrolling acanthus garlands wrapped around it. Four pointed pendants run off the medallion on the long axis, each one filled with the same trellis fill, and a matching lattice finial repeats above and below. Across the field, split-leaf arabesques curl out in long mirrored sweeps carrying tulips, carnations, rosebuds and serrated palmettes, all perfectly symmetrical on both axes, a sign the weavers followed a full cartoon rather than improvising. The frame is built in layers: an ivory inner band set with small squared cartouches and corner panels, a wide burgundy main border of alternating black and burgundy lunettes filled with boteh and floral sprays, a narrow green guard stripe of repeating tulip glyphs, and a soft rose outer band. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, with no crowding or cut motifs, which is the detail to check first on any medallion rug this busy.
A Black Field With Gold, Burgundy and Green
The ground is a true deep black, not charcoal and not a washed-out brown-black, and because the wool is so glossy it shifts between ink and warm graphite as you walk around it. Against that ground the vinework reads in olive and sage green, antique gold, straw and faded rose, with small highlights of ice blue and brick in the flower heads. The medallion is the focal color event: a ring of soft apricot gold enclosing deep burgundy, outlined in pale celadon, with four apricot cabochons floating off its tips. The main border carries that same burgundy at full strength, while the inner band is a warm sand ivory and the outer band a dusty rose brown that keeps the black edge from looking abrupt. The overall effect is jewel-toned but muted, the kind of palette that anchors cream walls and dark wood without fighting them. See the gallery for the exact tones, since black-ground rugs always photograph lighter in flat studio light than they appear underfoot.
Woven in Jaipur, India
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the few places still weaving classical medallion designs at a serious standard, and India is now where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is made. That is said with confidence, not as a consolation: the knot count here is high enough to carry the fine curved outlines of the arabesques without a single stepped or broken line, the wool is spun long and lustrous so the pile keeps its sheen, and the beat-down is firm enough that the rug lies dead flat straight off the roll. The selvedges are wrapped by hand, the fringe is knotted rather than machine-serged, and the back shows an even, regular knot grid with no slack rows. Woven in the Antique Tabriz drawing and finished to workshop standard, it is a formal rug built to be walked on for decades rather than a decorative copy.
