This 9'1" x 12'7" Oriental rug is a workshop piece in the full sense: a classical Tabriz cartoon, hand-knotted knot by knot in dense lustrous wool on a cotton foundation, brand new and never used. Handle a corner and the pile feels heavy and springy rather than dry, and the drawing holds its curve through every scroll, which is the real test of a floral cartoon at this scale. The selvages are tight, the ends are finished with clean cotton fringe, and the rug lies flat straight out of the roll. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The center carries a lobed ivory medallion built around a small 8 petal rosette, ringed by a slate blue cartouche band and a wreath of open roses, with slender pendant finials reaching north and south into the field. Around it the black ground is filled edge to edge with an all-over floral lattice of scrolling vines, palmettes, curled saz leaves and small budding sprays, with paisley forms tucked between the larger blossoms so no part of the field reads empty. Each of the 4 corners answers the medallion with a quarter of the same drawing. The main ivory border runs a chain of alternating rose and blue palmettes linked by a thin vine, flanked inside and out by slate blue guard stripes of smaller rosettes, and the whole panel is closed by a narrow black outer line. It is a formal, symmetrical layout that reads as one composition from across a room.

The ground is a deep saturated black that shifts toward charcoal where the light catches the pile, and it does the job a black field is meant to do: every flower on top of it looks brighter than it would on red or navy. The medallion and main border are a warm ivory with a faint cream cast, and the floral work inside them moves through dusty rose, deep burgundy and rust, soft powder and slate blue, sage and dark bottle green in the leaves, with small touches of tan and pale gold in the smaller buds. Nothing is neon and nothing is muddy; the palette is muted enough to sit under dark wood or a modern gray sofa, and the ivory border gives the black field a clean frame so the rug never feels heavy in a lighter room.

Where It Was Woven and How Well

This rug was made in Pakistan, where the better workshops have spent decades weaving classical Tabriz cartoons to a genuinely high standard, and it is honest, skilled, hand-knotted work. The back tells the story: tight, even rows of small knots on a cotton warp, no slack, no crowding, and a design that stays in register from one end to the other across more than 12 feet. That density is what lets the curved line survive, and it is also why the pile stands up under furniture. At 9'1" x 12'7" the rug is a true room size, slightly more generous than a standard 9 x 12 area rug, so a full seating group or a dining table with chairs pulled back stays on the wool. Never used, never walked on, still in showroom condition.
